After missing out on the sectional tournament due to injury last season, North Rockland junior Alex D’Angelo was at risk of the same fate this year. A nagging knee injury cost him some matches in the middle of the season, including holding him out of Eastern States, but he rehabbed and came back wrestling with a new fire. After avenging a loss from earlier in the season by defeating Suffern’s Peter Oliveto for a Rockland county title, D’Angelo also reversed his fortunes against Fox Lane’s Brandon Fay with a 1-0 decision in the 106-pound Division 1 final. When healthy, D’Angelo has proven that he is among the best lightweights in the section.
Here are the responses that I received from Alex:
How did you get started with wrestling? In seventh grade we did a wrestling gym unit and coach Martin thought it would be a good idea to join the modified team.
What is it that you love about the sport? It’s a great workout and it builds great mental toughness for life.
Describe what was going through your head when the referee raised your hand after the finals: Damn, I did it.
What was the most difficult obstacle that you had to overcome this season? My weak mindset and my lack of confidence.
What area do you feel that you’ve improved in the most over the course of the season? My hard work habits.
What are you like off of the mat? I’m reckless.
What is playing in your headphones while you get ready for a match? Rap and techno.
What is your favorite food? Lobster ravioli.
Name one thing that’s interesting about you that people may not know about: I’m a huge Wilfred (TV Show) fan.
I’ll be running these “Meet the Champs” posts everyday leading up to states. I emailed all of the section champs that I had information, but if you didn’t receive one for some reason and would like to be included, please email me at email@example.com.
