Pearl River senior John Muldoon has made no secret of his goals for this season. Winning several tournaments, including a Rockland county and Section 1 title, and placing third at Eastern States are all great accomplishments, but Muldoon has been there before. As the No. 2 seed at 132 pounds for the Division 1 state tourney and having lost to top-seeded Chris Mauriello of Hauppague by just one point at Eastern States, it’s a state title that has become Muldoon’s focus. But regardless of the outcome this weekend, he’s already established himself as one of the best to come out of the section in recent years.
Here are the responses that I received from John:
How did you get started with wrestling? In first grade my gym teacher and now coach Billy Donnelly convinced me to go out for Pearl Rivers kids club.
What is it that you love about the sport? How you’re an individual. It’s you out there and it’s always your fault whether you win or lose.
Describe what was going through your head when the referee raised your hand after the finals: That this is the same referee that raised my hand last year in the section finals.
What was the most difficult obstacle that you had to overcome this season? Getting impetigo on my face. Having to shave my head and look uglier than normal.
What area do you feel that you’ve improved in the most over the course of the season? On top. Me and my coaches have worked on riding and turning people.
What are you like off of the mat? Pretty laid back, but just as competitive whether it’s at the gym, playing video games or eating contests.
What is playing in your headphones while you get ready for a match? Tons of Eminem, Wicked ways, We all die one day.
What is your favorite food? Chicken cutlet with fresh mozzarella cheese and roasted red pepper with balsamic vinegar on an italian hero.
Name one thing that’s interesting about you that people may not know about: I always make sure I have an empty bladder before wrestling matches.
I’ll be running these “Meet the Champs” posts everyday leading up to states. I emailed all of the section champs that I had information, but if you didn’t receive one for some reason and would like to be included, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
