There will be one middle-schooler from Section 1 making the trip to Albany for the state championships next weekend, and he resides in Putnam Valley. Eighth-grader Mikey Bruno upset defending champ James Bathon of Pleasantville with an 8-5 decision in the Division 2 99-pound final, giving him his first title before he’s even attended a high school class. Bruno is part of a young group that will look to continue the success that this year’s team earned for the program with its first section title.
Here are Mikey’s words:
How did you get started with wrestling? My older brother started wrestling and got me to do the youth program.
What is it that you love about the sport? I love that hard work and dedication pay off.
Describe what was going through your head when the referee raised your hand after the finals: We chillin tonight.
What was the most difficult obstacle that you had to overcome this season? Not being able to drink soda.
What area do you feel that you’ve improved in the most over the course of the season? I feel I most improved on top and my defense.
What are you like off of the mat? I like to hang out with my friends.
What is playing in your headphones while you get ready for a match? Meek Mill.
What is your favorite food? Buffalo wings.
Name one thing that’s interesting about you that people may not know about: My teammates call me Meek.
I’ll be running these “Meet the Champs” posts everyday leading up to states. I emailed all of the section champs that I had information, but if you didn’t receive one for some reason and would like to be included, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
