The seeds for the New York State Championships on Feb. 28 and March 1 at the Times Union Center in Albany were just released, with 13 local Division 1 wrestlers landing in the top six in their respective weight classes, but none from Division 2.
Ossining senior Alex Delacruz (126), Pearl River senior John Muldoon (132), North Rockland senior Matt Caputo (138) and John Jay-EF senior Brett Perry (182) are the highest seeded Section 1 wrestlers, with each coming in at No. 2. Delacruz is a defending state champ, but received the two-seed because he lost a 5-3 decision to top-seeded Travis Passaro of Eastport South Manor in the Eastern States quarterfinals. Hauppauge’s Chris Mauriello is seeded No. 1 at 132 after winning a 5-4 decision over Muldoon in the Eastern States semis, while Amsterdam’s Brandon Lapi is the top seed at 138 as an Eastern States champ. Perry actually beat No. 1 seed Mark Tracy of Sachem East with a 3-2 decision in the third place match at Eastern States.
Tappan Zee senior Mike Manni is the third seed at 285, while John Jay-EF junior Jay Albis (113), Byram Hills junior Jon Errico (120), North Rockland junior Blaise Benderoth (152), Brewster senior Gino Gioielli (170), Beacon senior Andrew Grella (195) and Mamaroneck junior Youssif Hemida (220) are each seeded fourth. Tappan Zee senior John Hartnett (220) is seeded fifth and Arlington senior Alfredo Olmedo (99) is seeded sixth.
The only local Division 2 wrestler to be seeded in the top eight is Putnam Valley senior Angelo Zegarelli, who is No. 7 at 160.
Delacruz, Muldoon, Caputo, Perry, Manni and Benderoth were each All-State wrestlers last season.
