Meet the Champs: North Rockland’s Nick Didio

There was much talk about the 160-pound class in Division 1 this season, with four worthy champions competing for one title. In the end, it was North Rockland senior Nick Didio who emerged victorious, proving that he is among the top wrestlers in the section. Didio’s 12-5 decision over Somers’ Dom Celli not only earned him his first section title, but it established Didio as a guy to watch out for in the state tourney. His win also helped the Red Raiders capture their second consecutive team title by a wide margin.

Here’s what Nick had to say:

How did you get started with wrestling? I came out of the womb with a singlet on so I’m not really sure.

What is it that you love about the sport? I love that it’s just you and your opponent on that mat and everything that you train for pays off.

Describe what was going through your head when the referee raised your hand after the finals: I was really excited that it happened, but I knew I was going to win anyway.

What was the most difficult obstacle that you had to overcome this season? The most difficult was staying healthy and staying mind strong.

What area do you feel that you’ve improved in the most over the course of the season? I feel I’ve improved my wrestling all around.

What are you like off of the mat? Off the mat, I’m fat and happy and love to hang out.

What is playing in your headphones while you get ready for a match? A lot of house music and rap, depends how I’m feeling.

What is your favorite food? My favorite food is chicken parm easy.

Name one thing that’s interesting about you that people may not know about: I was Leonidas in the movie 300.

I’ll be running these “Meet the Champs” posts everyday leading up to states. I emailed all of the section champs that I had information, but if you didn’t receive one for some reason and would like to be included, please email me at
