Wednesday’s schedule

I hope that everyone is safe and warm on this snow-filled Wednesday morning. As we each emerge from our brief hibernation to shovel the driveway and clean off our cars, I’ve been reaching out to coaches to find out which of today’s dual meets are still on. Some have been postponed, but a good deal of them will still take place — most notably the Section 1 Dual Meet semifinal between Fox Lane and Arlington. That’s where I’ll be, so follow me on Twitter @vzmercogliano for live updates. I think this dual could be about as close as it gets, so swing matches will be a major factor.

Here is the rest of Wednesday’s schedule, with my picks in bold. If any of these duals have been postponed, please shoot me a tweet or a comment below:

Woodlands at Hastings, 4:15 p.m.
Dobbs Ferry at Edgemont, 4:15 p.m.
Croton-Harmon at Byram Hills, 4:30 p.m.
Greeley at Rye, 4:30 p.m.
John Jay at Somers, 4:30 p.m.
Lakeland/Panas at Tappan Zee, 4:30 p.m.
Hen Hud at Mahopac, 5:30 p.m.
Tri-meet: Port Chester and Scarsdale at Harrison, 4:30 p.m.

Section 1 Dual Meet Championships
Arlington vs. Fox Lane at Fox Lane Middle School, 4:30 p.m.

  1. Talk about irony… Today at Byram hills you have a wrestler who moved away from Byram hills’ best wrestler at 120/126 to pin one of their weaker ones, rather than give him a free 6 points in an attempt to win the match. Turns out an adult (that’s debatable) the Byram kid’s father decides to blurt out “classy move” and “gotta wrestle him eventually” loud enough for all to hear. Classy move yourself sir… Classy move…

Apparently the croton kid pinned the Byram kid last year after catching him in a cradle and the whole family is still a little sore about it. Nothing to gain for the croton kid. Some seeding points that won’t matter because of head-to-heads in the croton kid’s sectionals. That’s if he wins. If he loses I don’t know if he gets points for losing to a state qualifier. I think it has to be a section champ.

Try to remember where you are and that you’re dealing with high school kids. If you’re a parent act like one. I believe there are supposed to be sportsmanship standards posted around all section 1 athletic venues.

Stay classy San Diego … And Section 1.

I’m assuming someone from Degl’s will see this and hopefully pass it along…

  2. So Vince , how many times did you predict Arlington over Fox Lane ? Do I hear the crow squawking , while our favorite Journal News sports reporter eats a little humble crow ?

  3. About the Byram/Croton incident: The Byran wrestler had defeated the Croton wrestler once or twice before, then bumped up last year to wrestle him yet again. Byram was up 4-0 before getting caught and pinned. The “in your face” celebration from the Croton fans was reprehensible. Let’s tell the whole story if we’re going to tell it at all.
That being said, the parent in question is worthy of criticism. Good lord willing he will ship his next-born, by far his favorite, off to that Greenwich prep school so you won’t have to see the family ever again. And quit plugging you-know-who from that prima donna wrestling clinic! He already gets too much press on this site.

  4. The FL Arlington match could have gone either way. Even I was worried lol

I like to take victories with humility and loses with hope for better results in the future.

Byram Hills and Croton should both relax a little. Both of the wrestlers being talked about are very talented, but it’s a coaches decision where they will wrestle in a dual. Look at the FL coach. He made a good call bumping up Fay to preserve the dual win.
