Section 1 Duals: Fox Lane wins crucial swing matches vs. Arlington to advance

BEDFORD — One minute, Fox Lane sophomore Scott Rodrigues didn’t think he was even going to wrestle on Wednesday.

The next, he was matched up with one of the top wrestlers in Section 1.

“I knew I was wrestling only five minutes before the match. My dad (coach Anthony Rodrigues) said I might have a forfeit, so I wasn’t really sure,” Rodrigues said. “It almost calms the nerves not knowing who you’re wrestling, so that helps in a big match like that.”

Rodrigues was holding a surprising 5-2 lead against Arlington’s Nick Tolli at 138 pounds when the Admirals’ senior went down with a right wrist injury, forcing an injury default.

The six points in the crucial swing match gave the Foxes an early lift, as they edged out Arlington with a 47-36 win to advance to the Section 1 Dual Meet Championship at North Rockland next Wednesday.

“Not only did it hurt Nick, but I think it hurt us a little bit mentally, as far as the team,” said Arlington coach Fred Perry, noting that Tolli heard a popping noise when he hurt his wrist. “I think we were a little bit flat after Nick left, and there’s no excuse for that.”

Following Rodrigues’ win, junior Frank Surace came through in another swing match at 145 pounds to extend Fox Lane’s lead to 15-6.

surace4Surace was tied with Mike Chiasello at 2-2 with time running out, but he turned Chiasello late for three back points and a 5-2 decision.

“I knew I had some time,” Surace said. “I looked up and saw that I had about 30 seconds left. I had the turk locked up, and I took my time. I knew it was going to happen and I didn’t want to do anything stupid.”

Arlington forfeited at 152 pounds, and then Fox Lane senior Ben Ettlinger bumped up to 160 and won another swing match with a 4-0 decision over Mike Peterson.

The Admirals responded with pins from Brandon Badger (170), Jon Silveri (182) and Tanner Nielsen (220), but wins from John Clune (195), Josh Martin (285) and Kevin Lopez (99) maintained a 41-24 lead for the Foxes.

Alfredo Olmedo (106) and Brady Robin (113) cut Arlington’s deficit to 41-30 late in the dual, but Fox Lane senior Brandon Fay sealed the win with a 12-second pin at 120 pounds.

“With Brandon, it’s almost an automatic win every time,” Surace said. “He’s been very reliable for us in the lower weights, and I was confident that we had the match won – even though they had that stretch in the upper weights.”

To capture a Section 1 dual meet title, the Foxes will have to upset defending champ North Rockland.

They saw the Red Raiders last weekend at the Wallkill Dual Meet Tournament and lost 58-21.

“We’re going to need some big wins from our guys,” Scott Rodrigues said. “We’re going to have to have a solid performance from 99 (pounds) to 285 to beat them.”

As for Tolli, there is no diagnosis yet, but Perry didn’t sound too optimistic. If the wrist does sideline him, it would be the second season in a row in which Tolli’s season ended due to injury.

Last year, Tolli missed the postseason after injuring his knee.

“There was a popping noise, so it didn’t sound good,” Perry said. “I feel terrible for him. It’s his senior year, and he was doing really well this year.”

  1. 1) Just by looking at a couple of the matches, the ref sucked. That wasn’t a takedown for Rodriguez where you can obviously tell he only called it because 1 guy in the audience said “two”. It wasn’t even a peterson (The move, not the Arl wrestler) because he had the leg with 1 arm and his wrist with another while Tolli had a lock on Rodriguez’s leg.
Another, not bad, but “wtf”, was when Ettlinger had the cradle locked up for a solid 5 seconds without Peterson having anything on Ettlinger.

    2) Wonder why Arlington had 3 forfeits when they have the guys to fill out weightclasses.

    3) Wish the best of luck to Tolli and hope he recovers before the postseason

  2. Joe, you are right, the reffing sucked. Tolly had him pinned. It was in plain view of the ref. Offence, defence or neutral, if your shoulders are flat for a solid second, YOU ARE PINNED!

    Good luck Nick.

It will really suck to lose Nick Tolly for the second season in a row. Last year he blew his knee out at Easterns against Kevin Jack.

  3. Nick is out for the season, he managed to fracture his growth plate in his right wrist…..
