Tuesday’s results: Pleasantville coach Bob Bernarducci earns win No. 300

As Pleasantville coach Bob Bernarducci approached his 300th career win, he tried to keep it quiet.

The longtime wrestling coach has never been one to boast about personal milestones, but in today’s age of instant communication, it was virtually impossible to avoid.

“It was our first league match and I wanted to stress that to the kids. I really didn’t mention it (the milestone),” Bernarducci said. “They all knew because my older son Kevin put stuff out there through social media.”

To show their support, the majority of Bernarducci’s 2010 section championship team turned up at the Panthers’ dual meet at Croton-Harmon on Tuesday.

Pleasantville came away with a 60-24 win, helping Bernarducci become just the third coach in Section 1 history to reach 300 career wins. The others are current Mahopac coach Dennis DiSanto and retired Fox Lane coach Joe Amuso.

“It’s really an honor. I’m very good friends with Joe and (retired New Rochelle coach Jim Guccione),” Bernarducci said. “It really does mean a lot to be mentioned with them.”

Bernarducci began his career as the head coach at Irvington in 1982 before taking over at Pleasantville in 1990, which is where he’s been ever since.

A highpoint came in 2010 when the Panthers captured a Division 2 section title, and they appear to be working their way toward competing for another. They return both section champions from last year’s team, which took fourth overall at sectionals.

James Bathon (99 pounds) and Stephen Paternostro (126) are each undefeated as they defend their titles, while teammate Thomas Marrone (160) has also yet to lose.

“This year, we only have two seniors. That’s it,” Bernarducci said. “I think the kids that I have are really progressing. They seem like they’re getting better every time on the mat.”

Bernarducci was quick to credit assistant coach Steven Tornambe, who he said, “makes it so easy for me.”

  1. Nice move by Ettinger to go up 2 weight classes to test himself against Klein. Was closer than any of the other contenders at 160 have come.

  2. Nice Move,

I agree with you on that and word is that Ettinger controlled the match. Guess the jump was too much

  3. sectiononealum on

If you have ever wrestled in your life you know you can control a match and still win. You can control 99% of a match and slip up once and lose. Now I don’t know how that match went and was not there so I can’t vouch for what happened. But a 4-2 match score is a close match, and Ettlinger is a good wrestler so it is believable that he controlled the match . Props to him for seeking out tough matches, alot of guys in the section are scared to challenge themselves
