I’ll be back tomorrow with videos and results from more tournaments, but here is my story from the Carlucci duals with box scores:

PURCHASE — Even at this early juncture of the season, Fox Lane has already had plenty of wins to feel good about. The Foxes are once again one of the top teams in Section 1, but even the best can be humbled from time to time.

After winning five straight dual meets at the Carlucci Memorial Dual Meet Tournament to reach the finals at Purchase College on Saturday, Fox Lane met its match in Section 9 power Monroe-Woodbury.

“That was a pretty bad blowout,” senior Ben Ettlinger said after a 63-13 loss to the Crusaders. “That’s the worst we’ve ever lost since I’ve been on the team.”

The Foxes started off well against Monroe-Woodbury, picking up three straight wins from Scott Rodrigues (138 pounds), Frank Surace (145) and Ettlinger (152) to build a 13-0 lead.

Each of those three went 6-0 in the tournament, with Surace making a dramatic comeback against Monroe-Woodbury’s Shane Smith to overcome a two-point deficit in the third period.

“I feel I wrestle better under pressure,” Surace said. “I had in my mind that I was winning the match, and no one was going to take that from me. I let him up, and then took him down in the last few seconds.”

Although Fox Lane got off to a strong start, it wouldn’t win another match against a dominant Crusaders’ lineup that had its way throughout the weekend.

The next highest placed team from Section 1 was Somers, which lost 63-24 to Section 9’s Newburgh in the third place dual. Despite giving up forfeits in five different weight classes, the Tuskers went 4-2 overall thanks to excellent performances from 132-170 pounds.

“I’m very happy,” said 152-pounder Liam Hiene, who along with Larry Courtien (145) and Dom Celli (160) has yet to lose for Somers this season. “I’m proud of everyone that we were able to put in to fill out a lineup and fill all of the weight classes that we can. Everyone was able to pull through and get some big points with pins.”

Harrison took fifth place, getting a measure of revenge against the same Tappan Zee team that it had lost to during the Section 1 Dual Meet Championships with a 48-33 win.

“Last time we started at 99 (pounds) and built up a big lead, and then they came back and built up some momentum, and we couldn’t stop it,” Harrison coach Vin Nicita said. “This time, we started at 138. After we got through their two big guys (defending section champs John Hartnett and Mike Manni), they only had a six-point lead on us, which was huge because we had some of our strongest wrestlers coming up.”

Port Chester defeated White Plains to take seventh, while Yorktown edged Eastchester to place ninth.

Eastchester’s Rob Lalli picked up his 100th career win.
