Brewster claims Bernie Miller Invitational title

I’ll have more info on this tourney — and more — posted tomorrow, but for now, here is my story and the box scores that we’ve accumulated.

RYE — At times during the Bernie Miller Invitational at Rye on Saturday, Brewster simply looked dominant.

The Bears won all five of their dual meets to capture a tournament title, but they know the true test will come on Tuesday when the Section 1 Dual Meet Championships begin.

“This is a good opener,” said senior Gino Gioielli, who was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler in the tournament. “A few years ago when we won (the Section 1 Dual Meet championship), we had a pretty stacked team, and then people thought we fell off. But I feel like overall, we have a good team. Some people might overlook us, but I think we’re a powerhouse in Section 1.”

Brewster won the Section 1 duals in 2011 and now has a group that could challenge for another title.

The Bears were the only team at Rye on Saturday to go undefeated, with Gioielli (170 pounds), Tyler Gonska (120), Nick McGill (138) and Liam Erickson (145) each going 5-0.

“I know there are a lot of tough teams out there,” Brewster coach Tom Looby said. “We have a very tough group. I have a lot of returners, but it all depends on matchups. We’ll have a better idea when we see some of the other results to see what some of the other teams have.”

While Brewster cruised to a first-place finish, the most exciting dual of the day decided which team would take second. Tradition would indicate that John Jay was the most likely candidate, but Lakeland/Panas had other plans.

The Rebels were able to pull off a 39-33 upset over the Indians thanks in a large part to a stretch of four straight wins from 132-152 pounds. John DiDomenico, Jonathan Pla, Blake Cohen and Chris Carlucci pulled out consecutive close matches by a combined total of just seven points.

“We weren’t expected to do well in this tournament and beat teams like John Jay and Scarsdale, so we definitely sent a message to Section 1,” Cohen said. “That was important. That’s where four of our seniors are – including me. We all wrestled in the offseason and put a lot of work in, so that helps out the team a lot.”

While Lakeland/Panas is reaping the benefits of having a senior-laden lineup, John Jay is rebuilding with a young core. The Indians took third overall, but had two freshmen – Louie Cree (113) and Evan Frank (160) – go 5-0 on the day.

“We have six freshmen on the varsity team, which is pretty good,” said Cree, who was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Freshman. “This is the first tournament that I’ve gone undefeated in and actually won a trophy in. It’s a really good day for me.”

The Most Outstanding Senior was Rye’s Fritz Zahringer (152), while Gonska was named as the top junior and Scarsdale’s Michael Dabramo (106) took the honor for sophomores.
