In our final team preview of the preseason, we’re checking in with one of the better teams in Section 1. Brewster has been on a steady rise in recent years, and has established itself as one of the top dual meets around. The Bears proved that with a first-place finish at the Section 1 duals two years ago, but they seem to have the firepower to make some noise in tournament settings this year — with the obvious goal being a better finish at sectionals. They return eight of their nine sectional qualifiers from last season — including all four who placed, highlighted by defending champ Liam Erickson — which I believe could put them in the mix for a top five finish.
Here are the responses that I received from coach Tom Looby:
How did your team do last season? Season: 17-6; Sectional results: 12th place.
Who are your top returning wrestlers? Grant Cuomo, 8th grade (31-11 career record; sixth in the section last season); Nick McGill, Jr. (75-32); Tyler Gonska, Jr. (68-26; sixth in the section); Gino Gioelli, Sr. (77-24; fifth in the section; captain; pictured above); Liam Erickson, Sr. (129-25; on his way to breaking the school record of 167 set by Mike Parise; defending section champ; captain); Tom Kozal, Jr.; Joe Petrogallo, Jr.; Mike Larm, Soph.; John Burns, Soph.; John Rock, Jr.; Joe Buonadonna, Jr.
Who are the top wrestlers that you lost to graduation? Andrew Sion and Ryan Ford.
What is the biggest strength of your lineup? Strength in lineup would be that we have many starters returning.
What is your main area of concern entering the season? No concerns.
Which team(s) is your biggest rival? League teams.
Will you host any tournaments this season? We will host the annual JV Tournament on Friday, December 27th at BHS. There are still opening for those interested.
Do you have any team goals? To get better with each match. We would like to continue to promote the sport at all levels. Long term goals… Team titles, section champs, state champs.
