I already stopped by Mahopac’s practice about two weeks ago—which you can read about right here—but here are the team preview answers that I received from coach Dennis DiSanto:
How did your team do last season? Third place- Herricks Tournament; fourth place Section One Duals; fourth place Port Jervis Duals; third place Fairfield Ward Tournament; second place in our league; qualified nine for sectionals; four divisional champions; three Section One Place-winners; eight All-League wrestlers; 15-10 dual meet record.
Who are your top returning wrestlers? Abby Bunyea, Soph., 106 (21-14; pictured above); Joe Frezza, Jr., 132 (20-23); Chris Cornell, Jr., 138 (24-14); Mike DiNardo, Soph., 152 (didn’t wrestle last year due to injury- divisional champion two years ago); Ryan Delahanty, Jr., 220 (30-10- division champion, fourth in section); Mike Tartaglia, Sr., 145 (8-8).
Who are the top wrestlers that you lost to graduation? Aaron Gallagher (third in section) and Tim Bunyea (sixth in section).
What is the biggest strength of your lineup? Probably our middle weights.
What is your main area of concern entering the season? We are pretty young and inexperienced in a lot of weight classes. Last year, we had 50 wrestlers come out and this year we have about the same, but a lot of new kids are wrestling for the first time.
Which team(s) is your biggest rival? Carmel and Somers.
Will you host any tournaments this season? Pete Caruso Invitational Tournament on February 1st.
Do you have any team goals? We have a good chance to win out league and I think we can have a good showing in the section.
