Suffern is one of those programs that just doesn’t ever seem to have a down year, with last season serving as a perfect example. The Mounties didn’t have any section champs and were considered to be in somewhat of a “rebuilding” mode, but they had enough guys wrestle tough at sectionals to get them a seventh overall finish in Division 1. And now with six of its nine sectional qualifiers from last year back, I like Suffern’s chances of landing back in the top 10 this season.
Here are the thoughts of coach Chris Matteotti on the upcoming season:
How did your team do last season? 10-4 dual meet record; Seventh place in Section 1.
Who are your top returning wrestlers? Daiton Powell, Jr. (fourth in Section 1); Peter Pjetri. Jr. (fourth in Section 1; pictured above)
Who are the top wrestlers that you lost to graduation? Alex Oliveto (second in Section 1) and James Desimone (fourth in Section 1).
What is the biggest strength of your lineup? We are two-three guys deep in many weight classes.
What is your main area of concern entering the season? Staying healthy. We had a number of injuries this past off-season.
Which team(s) is your biggest rival? All of the Rockland schools are very competitive. They are all rivals.
Will you host any tournaments this season? JV County Tournament: Friday, January 17th. Kohl Invitational: Saturday, January 18th.
Do you have any team goals? We want to improve throughout the course of the season, hitting our peak as the post-season approaches; and we want to be competitive in every dual meet and tournament giving our team an opportunity to win.
