Here is this week’s college update from Iowa Style Wrestling Club:
ISW D1 Wrestlers Compete for a Spot at NCAAs
Big 10 Championships
Steven Rodrigues (Fox Lane HS) of Illinois lost to eventual sixth place finisher Paquale Greco of Northwestern and eventual seventh place finisher Camryn Jackson of Michigan at 141 lbs. Rodrigues did not place.
Jacob Berkowitz (Scarsdale HS) of Northwestern lost to 5th-ranked nationally and eventual second place finisher Kevin Steinhaus and then lost a 9-3 match to 23rd-ranked nationally and eventual fifth place finisher CJ Magrum of Ohio State at 184 lbs. Berkowitz also didn’t place.
James Brundage (Ossining HS) of Rider went 3-1 at 174 lbs, taking third place. Brundage’s only loss came to Jermaine John of Hofstra, but unfortunately since 174 lbs at CAA Championships only qualifies one wrestler for nationals, Brundage didn’t qualify.
Vin Grella (Beacon HS) of Binghamton went 1-2, losing to third place finisher Mitchell Wightman of BU and second place finisher Brett Miller of Old Dominion at 165 lbs.
Jack Mckeever (Brookfield HS) of Binghamton did not place at 157 lbs.
Sam Speno (Fox Lane HS) of NC State went 1-2, both of his losses coming to No. 20 nationally ranked Erik Spjut of VT, but Speno upset the No. 1 seed and 13th-ranked nationally Geoffrey Alexander of Maryland to qualify for nationals. Speno took fourth at 133 lbs.
Billy Watterson (John Jay-Cross River HS) of Brown went 3-2 to place fourth at 125 lbs, which qualifies him for the NCAA tournament. Watterson beat Jeffrey Ott of Harvard to enter the third place match but then lost to 23rd-ranked nationally David Terao of American by a score of 5-3.
Penn Gottfried (Ardsley HS) of Columbia went 2-3 at 125 lbs to take eighth place, just short of qualifying.
Andrew Lenzi (Fordham Prep HS) of UPenn didn’t place at 149 lbs. His only two losses came from 6th-ranked nationally and champion Steve Santos of Columbia and fifth place finisher Kevin Tao of American.
