States: Aslanian, Delacruz capture state titles

While only two locals made it to the finals at the New York state wrestling championships at the Times Union Center in Albany on Saturday, they both made it count.

Edgemont senior Trey Aslanian captured in his first state title in his third consecutive state finals appearance, defeating top-seeded Sean Peacock of Midlakes in the 120-pound Division 2 final with a 4-2 decision. Trey overcame an early deficit to avenge a loss to Peacock in last year’s final.

Ossining junior Alex Delacruz made it a clean sweep for Section 1 at 120 pounds with his 11-7 decision over top-seeded Steven Michel of Lancaster in Division 1. It was a great day for Delacruz, who came into the tournament as a wild card, but avenged his section finals loss against Pearl River’s John Muldoon with a 6-4 overtime win today in the semifinals.

I’ll be back tomorrow with reaction and quotes from Aslanian, Delacruz and more, but right now, it’s time to go home. Congrats to all of the local wrestlers who competed, and have a great night everyone!

  1. Awesome job by Trey and Aslanian, congrats.
-Looks like 16 total placers from D1 + D2 (17 including Blaise’s 7th), a couple of disappointing matches & results , wish there were more finalists but overall looks like a pretty good year at states. Definitely a big improvement in the D2 performance including a great job by guys wrestling back to place.

D1 finished in 5th place 1/2 point behind Section 5 (Yorktown highest team in 15th place)
–Finished in 4th place last year just ahead of section 2

D2 finished in 6th place (Nanuet highest team in 11th place)
–Finished in 10th place last year

  2. Congratulations to Trey. You deserve this title with all of the hard work. Enjoy it with the people that care about you the most.

Also great job to Alex way to come back.

All of the rest of the wrestlers that placed great job reset and get after for next year and for the seniors look back at the journey and take what you learned into college to excel.

    Greatest sport for these athletes

  3. @tilt, catholic school kids aren’t recognized by the federation. This means that if a catholic school kid places within top 6 they will not be considered all stated, therefore they will have a 7th and 8th place match and the 7th place kid be considered all state.
