Hitting the road to Albany

Good morning all! I’m getting ready to hit the road and make my way to Albany for the first day of the New York state wrestling championships at the Times Union Center, but I wanted to share my story from today’s paper. This year’s championships feel especially exciting because there is a lot of uncertainty, and quite a few wrestlers who have the upside to make some noise. In my first few years on the wrestling beat, it always felt like Somers grad Brian Realbuto was the most likely state champ from Section 1, but this year it’s a bit more wide open. Yesterday, I handicapped the odds for the top 10 guys who I believe have the best shots at winning the whole thing this weekend.

We’ll be providing full coverage all weekend, which includes videos, photos, results, recaps and live updates. I’ll be posting on the blog often, but the best way to stay up to the minute is to follow me on Twitter @vzmercogliano. Wrestling will run through the quarterfinals (plus a whole bunch of wrestle backs) today, before picking back up with the semis tomorrow morning. Good luck to all of the locals who will be competing!

  1. Vince thank you for all your amazing coverage of section 1 wrestling this year….this blog is a must read every morning over coffee!!!

  2. Vince, as you stated, during Brian Realbuto’s tenure in Section 1, he was “the man” in terms of best odds to win a state title … but I also wanted to acknowledge the terrific performance by Section 1 in 2011 (Brian’s junior year), when Section 1 had 9 wrestlers reach the state finals and 5 that became state champs!

Just to salute those 2011 wrestlers once again… Our D2 state champ was Ryan Osleeb (North Salem, 130). Our D1 state champs were Jimmy Duckham (Arlington, 103), Steven Rodrigues (Fox Lane, 130), Brian Realbuto (Somers, 135), Malcolm Allen (New Rochelle, 285). The Section1 D2 wrestler placing 2nd that year was Trey Aslanian (Edgemont, 103). The D1 wrestlers placing 2nd were Dylan Realbuto (Somers, 96), Sam Speno (Fox Lane, 112) and Danny Ventura (Fox Lane, 119). The other Section 1 placers were Drew Longo (Ardsley, 112), Asher Kramer (Suffern, 112), Jimmy Kyreakedes (Dobbs Ferry, 119), Nick Oliveto (Beacon, 119), Rino Devita (Somers, 145) and Vin Grella (Beacon, 152).

As you’ve reported, many of those folks are now making some noise at the college level.

Best of luck for continued success to the Section 1 alumni and, of course, to the Section 1 2013 state qualifiers!
