Meet the Champs: Yorktown’s Steven Sabella

From Yorktown’s outstanding senior class, only one wrestler can call himself a two-time section champ. Steven Sabella made the huge leap from 170 to 195 pounds this season, which came with questions about how quickly he would adjust to the bigger and stronger opponents. He showed pretty early on that he could handle the transition, and really opened some eyes at Eastern States when he had state title favorite Reggie Williams of Johnson City on the ropes in the semis (he lost in the final seconds, 7-5). Sabella earned his second consecutive section title with a 3-2 decision over Greeley’s Scott Wymbs in the Division 1 finals, and now will look to make a run in his final state tournament.

Year: Senior

Weight class: 195 in D1

How many years have you been wrestling for? Nine years.

Is this your first section title? This is my second section title.

Describe what was going through your head when the referee raised your hand after the finals: Having your hand raised after winning a section title is what every wrestler dreams of. I felt great after my hand was raised. Knowing that I achieved my goal of being a section champ twice is such a rewarding feeling.

What was the most difficult obstacle that you had to overcome this season? The jump from 170 to 195 was definitely my biggest obstacle this year. (Teammate Thomas) Murray and I both fell around the same weight over the summer and we had to make the decision as to who was going where. Wrestling underweight had both its advantages and disadvantages, but I handled it all very well and I’m glad that I accomplished what I set out to do.

What area do you feel that you’ve improved in the most over the course of the season? My offense. Last year, I scored most of my points from my defense and counters, but I really put a lot of work into expanding my offense and opening up the score more. It has helped my tremendously at 195.

What are some of your favorite things to do outside of wrestling? Yorktown takes frisbee to new extremes, so come the spring time its all frisbee every day.

What is playing in your headphones while you get ready for a match? Lose Yourself by Eminem, Sail by Awolnation, or Radioactive by Imagine Dragons.

What is your favorite TV show? Tosh.0 or SportsCenter.

Name one thing that’s interesting about you that people may not know about: I speak fluent Russian (Steven actually wrote something in Russian, but I can’t get it to show up right on the blog).
