Thomas Murray was one of a handful of Yorktown wrestlers who came into the season with high hopes, and he delivered last week with a 3-0 decision over Beacon’s Andrew Grella in the 182-pound final in Division 1. Murray had placed second last season, which made this year’s section title vindicate his place as one of the top wrestlers in the section. He’ll join three other Huskers in Albany, as Yorktown will send more state qualifiers than any other local team.
Weight class: 182 in D1
How many years have you been wrestling for? Nine.
Is this your first section title? Yes.
Describe what was going through your head when the referee raised your hand after the finals: Just happy that I finally won a title after all this time.
What was the most difficult obstacle that you had to overcome this season? Just staying fresh and healthy all year. Finding the right balance between practicing, school work and leisure time.
What area do you feel that you’ve improved in the most over the course of the season? I feel like one thing I improved a lot in is my defense and not letting people get in on my legs.
What are some of your favorite things to do outside of wrestling? I love playing soccer and ultimate frisbee.
What is playing in your headphones while you get ready for a match? Definitely some old school rap, like Biggie, Tupac, Nas, etc.
What is your favorite TV show? The Walking Dead.
Name one thing that’s interesting about you that people may not know about: I didn’t choose the thug life; the thug life chose me.
