While the wild cards were released late last night to section officials across the state, they didn’t become official until 5 p.m. today. I was asked by section coordinator Eric Romanino to hold them until now in the event that any changes were made, and I respected those wishes. It’s a good thing I did, because there have been some last minute changes.
I can now tell you that Section 1 received nine at-large bids into the state tournament at the Times Union Center in Albany on Feb. 22-23 – eight in Division 1, and one in Division 2. The seeds will be announced on Sunday.
Here are the wrestlers that received at-large wild card bids:
Division 1
120 – Alex Delacruz, Jr., Ossining
120 – Blaise Benderoth, Soph., North Rockland
132 – Jake DiMarsico, Sr., North Rockland
138 – Colby Kash, Sr., Clarkstown North
145 – Brad Marvin, Soph., Ketcham
195 – Scott Wymbs, Sr., Horace Greeley
220 – Trent Lofaro, Sr., Ossining
285 – David Varian, Sr., Yorktown
Division 2
120 – Anthony Calvano, Sr., Nanuet
While Section 1 received nine at-large bids, there are four others who were selected as alternates. The top four wild cards from each weight class get into the tournament automatically, but others are selected in case someone has to drop out. If you see an A5 listed next to a wrestler’s name, that means he is the first alternate in his weight class. If you see A6, that means that two wrestlers would need to drop out for that wrestler to get in.
Here are the wrestlers that were selected as alternates:
Division 1
106 – Jon Errico, Soph., Byram Hills (A5)
Division 2
106 – Tyler Aslanian, Jr., Edgemont (A6)
126 – Joe Dillon, Jr., Nanuet (A6)
138 – Kyle Kelvas, Sr., Putnam Valley (A6)

what happened to ben miller?
anyone have the link to full wild cards
I heard Ben denied his, he didn’t want it
In the history of the at-large addition to the tournament, has an alternate ever been added to the bracket ??
Excoach, one will be this year seeing as Miller doesn’t want to go. Unless he was an alternate.
Miller was A-3 so everyone moves up a slot.
Miller opened the door for section 9 160lber JP VANDERCLIFF MONROE WOODBURY 12 A5 31 – 10
y did miller decline?
If your going to decline going to states, why even go to sectionals, or wrestle for that matter? One of the craziest things I’ve ever heard, if true.
Huh, I agree
Excoach, I think 1 or 2 section one kids made it as alternates last year or the year before at 170#.
What is dale white ranked in the statae?
Why are there 2 WC for 120??
Gonzo, wildcards are given state wide based on seeding points, prior finish and strength of section. The 120s in section one merely stacked up faborably against the other 120s in the state in terms of total points.
Just curious, isn’t the section 11 D2 tournament tomorrow? So how can they release the wildcards before tomorrow night? I know the seeds will be done supposedly by Sunday night but unless they pre-calculated all of the Section 11 D2 guys and determined that none of them would have enough points regardless of placing, then not sure how that works.
Section XI D2 is one of the weaker sections in the state. They wouldnt get any WC’s. They are weaker that section 1 D2. While looking over some of the WC’s to see if it was worth a challenge saw that a Section 3 D2 freshman beat out a JR who placed top 3 several times. The Section 3 kid took a 2nd and a sixth and had more points. That wasjust for an alternate spot though. To have enough points for a wildcard the wrestlers would have had to win the section the last two years and taken 2nd this year. This is for a D2 wrestler from Section 1 and in a weight class not even that strong. Sec 11 D2 would be even harder. A Sec11 D2 kid would have had to place in the state and I dont think many do if any. and if one did who would he lose to down there ? anything can happen but if they haven’t wrestled their championships yet, surprisingly, i doubt they are hanging on for wild cards. I would think they’ve wrestled by now though
Tim coyne from Tappan Zee and made it 2 years ago as an alternate. He actually decked the #2 seed (who eventually took 3rd) and lossed two close matches (one to eventual state champ).
Marvin is only a sophomore?
