Sectionals: Several rivals on collision course

No weight class in Section 1 has as many wrestlers ranked at the state level than 120 pounds, where Ossining’s Alex Delacruz, Pearl River’s John Muldoon and North Rockland’s Blaise Benderoth form a lethal trio. The winner who emerges from that group on Sunday at Pace will likely be viewed as the favorite for a state title, which has made that the most talked about weight class around here this season. But 120 isn’t the only class with a lot of intrigue, as there are several wrestlers who should match up in some long awaited bouts. That’s what makes tomorrow the most exciting day of the year; scores will be settled, and the talking will get done on the mat.

The plan for tomorrow (the first step being digging my car out from 20 inches of snow) is for me to cover the D1 tourney at Pace, and Dan DeFrancesco to cover the D2 tourney at Irvington. As always, follow me on Twitter @vzmercogliano for live updates, and follow Dan @Lohud_DeFran for the same treatment from Irvington. I’ll update the blog with results as often as I can, and I’ll be taking videos all day. I’ve also highlighted some D2 matches for Dan to shoot, so we’ll be posting matches from both tourneys.

Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at each site and go straight through to the finals. I’m certainly expecting a long one. Best of luck to all of the wrestlers competing at both locations!
