Two Putnam Valley wrestlers reached the 100-win plateau in a week’s span, with senior Chris Bruno earning his 100th at the Minisink Valley Gene Bringham tourney and junior AJ Mirabal joining the century club at the Washingtonville Wizards duals on Saturday. Bruno and Mirabal are the fifth and sixth wrestlers, respectively, in Tigers’ history to reach 100 wins. Put Valley has only had a full varsity program since the 2004-05 season.
“AJ Mirabal started in eighth grade and we forget sometimes that he had back to back years (8th and 9th) with medical issues that kept him from finishing each of his first two seasons, otherwise he would have reached 100 a long time ago. AJ is a tough competitor that is now enjoying the benefits of solid off-season work,” coach Will Carano said. “Chris Bruno is quiet, unassuming and has no flash to what he does on the mat. He’s a workhorse with a huge gas tank and that makes it hard for anyone to out-work him on the mat.”
The Tigers have developed some depth in the past few seasons and once again look like they’ll be in the mix for a top three finish in Division 2. Along with Bruno and Mirabal, they have multiple wrestlers who could place.
