Notebook: RCCs, Super 16 undergoing ups and downs

With so much talk regarding which wrestlers would be available for the final weekend of the regular season, I reached out to some coaches to ask about the regulations on how many tourneys a guy can compete in and how they prioritize. It’s becoming quite clear that the Super 16 and Rockland County Championships are trending in opposite directions. While the field at the RCCs is looking as strong as ever, the Super 16 has become a bit more of an afterthought in Westchester and Putnam. Don’t get me wrong – there are still a lot of good wrestlers and good teams that will be competing today at Yonkers – but a point isn’t made of making sure that guys are available in the same way that they do in Rockland.

This week’s notebook focused on the reasons that some big names won’t be at the Super 16 today [1], with the main one being a point limitation. A wrestler cannot exceed 20 points before the postseason, with a tourney being worth two points and a dual meet worth one. Some guys are out of points, which has diluted the field at bit at the Super 16. The original concept for the tournament was to get the best 16 teams together from Westchester and Putnam, but that’s very hard to do because there are close to 50 schools combined in those counties. Yonkers coach Pete Vulpone told me that they’ve discussed ranking the top 16 in each weight class from those counties, but he said it’s impossible to know which guys to hold out of a tourney throughout the season in anticipation. In Rockland, where it is much easier to crown a true county champ in each weight class with only nine teams in the county, coaches make their schedules with the RCCs in mind.
