NY Wrestling News state rankings

Last week, newyorkwrestlingnews.com released its latest state weight class rankings, with 13 locals making the cut. Typically, I don’t put a ton of stock into any kind of state rankings because, as someone who puts together rankings for just one section, I find it nearly impossible to imagine anyone who is familiar enough with every section in the state to come up with complete and accurate rankings. But with Eastern States as its guide, it seems to me that NY Wrestling News did a pretty admirable job.

New Rochelle’s Nick Barbaria (No. 2 at 106), Ossining’s Alex Delacruz (No. 1 at 120), Pearl River’s John Muldoon (No. 3 at 120), North Rockland’s Blaise Benderoth (No. 4 at 120), Arlington’s Nick Tolli (No. 6 at 120), Somers’ Dylan Realbuto (No. 2 at 126), Fordham Prep’s Sam Melikian (No. 3 at 132), Fox Lane’s Tom Grippi (No. 5 at 145), John Jay-EF’s Brett Perry (No. 8 at 170), Nanuet’s Dan Breit (No. 3 at 220), and Yorktown’s Joe Mastro (No. 8 at 152), Steven Sabella (No. 5 at 195) and David Varian (No. 8 at 285) round out the field of Section 1 wrestlers who were represented in the rankings. Of course, the class that really stands out is at 120 pounds, where Section 1 has four guys ranked and its only top-ranked wrestler in Delacruz. While it’s noted that Muldoon had a lead on Delacruz at the time of the Ossining junior’s disqualification during Eastern States, NY Wrestling News points to Delacruz’s pin of second-ranked Mike D’Angelo of Commack in the Shoreline finals, who has beaten Muldoon, as its reason for ranking Delacruz ahead of the Pearl River standout. Edgemont’s Trey Aslanian standing was hurt by not placing at Eastern States, as he dropped out of the top eight. The 120-pound class was the only one in which more than one local wrestler was ranked.

Yorktown has to be patting itself on the back as the only Section 1 team with more than one wrestler who was ranked. The Huskers have three, and you could make a case for Thomas Murray to be included at 182. All in all, I think that most of the locals who deserved to mentioned were included. For those wondering, I’ll have my updated weight class rankings for Section 1 posted before divisionals in less than two weeks.
