Notebook: Bunyea showing she belongs

Over the course of my three seasons on the wrestling beat I’ve come across teams that have a girl in their lineup, but I can’t recall one that had a winning record until this year. With her major decision on Thursday against Yorktown, Mahopac freshman Abby Bunyea improved to 20-11 on the season as she continues to garner respect around the section. The younger sister of the Indians’ 182-pounder Tim Bunyea, Abby started wrestling in fourth grade when she would tag along with her brothers. In her first season on varsity she’s been occupying the 99-pound spot in Mahopac’s lineup, and she’s been showing major signs of improvement. Some might feel awkward when they step onto the mat to wrestle her, but you’d better bring your ‘A’ game against this lady.

This week’s notebook also features items on a stacked 120-pound weight class, as well as this weekend’s tournament information [1]. I’ll be heading out to the Kohl Invitational at Suffern shortly.
