This is Brian Heyman filling in today. There has been talk about Yorktown being a top contender for a sectional title this season, and the Huskers showed these last two days that the talk is justified. They won their five round-robin matches and then beat Brewster Saturday in the final of their own tournament, the ninth annual Yorktown/Chase Media Group Holiday Wrestling Championships. It marked the first time the host team has won it.
The Huskers’ big four, returning sectional champs Steven Sabella and David Varian and runner-ups Joe Mastro and Tom Murray, all had pins in the championship round. But a lot of guys contributed to this. For instance, Alec Tapia and Jimmy Kaishian both went 6-0. Kyle Santucci won his 152-pound final via pin, good for his 100th victory. He was named Most Outstanding Wrestler.
“We’ve been shooting for it this year,” Sabella said about this team title. “We have a lot of mini goals leading up to our final goal, obviously the section title, better yet, the state title. … I feel like today we showed how dominant we can be when we all do our part.”
My article will be on LoHud.com and in The Journal News Sunday.
Also, Hen Hud’s Lance Perlmutter won the Matt Zeller Sportsmanship Award.

Somers brought 4 kids to a dual tournament????? Oh how the mighty have fallen. Kinda sad that a program that was good for 20+ years can go to nothing in just 2 years.
Easily explained, Coach DiSanto! Mahopac will be great for the next 20.
Anyone have the score between Murray and Messenger?
not close messinger dominated, also pinned gosset at 195
Hope all the folks at Somers responsible for DiSantos ouster are happy now. This program is a disgrace and should be disbanded immediately.
Total disrespect to the other 11 teams in attendance to have the gall to show up with 3 wrestlers. The AD should have some ‘splainin’ to do as well.
Score was 10-6 messinger looked great murray, looked sick all weekend, expect both to place in
States
Nice work Town! All of the crop is proud of you guys and its the first town has this tourney under this name but we won in 97 when it was just the Yorktown Duels beating Mahopac and somers
So with every post somers numbers got lower. They had six. Their weights only allowed 5 to wrestle. Guys forfeit to them. Had a few guys out with injuries, still a mess though
In only dual posted its 4 kids, 132, 138, 145, 170 that’s 4
Has Somers even had worse than a .500 season since 1969? This is very sad to see
Pardone me, I stand corrected they wrestled 4(see above) vs Croton. Still a disgrace!
There were 6. I believe two 132s. Two 138, a 145, and a 160. Why lie about six lol some people do more than read box scores. Talk to a coach. They have guys Out. Not enough that they will ever have a full lineup. Which is a joke. But to me its just funnier that the number kkept going down
Let’s not jump the gun on Somers.
They certified 23 wrestlers in November
•7 Freshman
•1 Soph
•13 Juniors
•2 Seniors
How many are not eligible? From Scholastics, skin checks or team discipline issues
But if the program has dropped off that many students off the team
Alumni have to ask –Why?
Then you have to look at the feeder programs
The youth or pee-wee – check if they still have a modified and what their numbers are.
And see if it can be turned around quickly.
Its still early in the season- and I think Somers can still be a factor
yes Jack, Somers still has a youth as well as a modified program.
Don’t blame the feeder programs. Note that only one sophomore was certified in November, while 7 fresmen were. It has been reported that the atmosphere in the wrestling room last year was not the greatest, especially for freshman. It looks like it drove some away. Well we had a pretty good run for over 40 years. Not too shabby. It was nice while it lasted.
Jack- I think it is normal for a Somers alumni to ask what is going on in Somers when they are 0-15 and they haven’t had a losing season in decades. I am sure there is plenty of blame to go around but from what i heard the youth program has been decimated.
Brewster will visit Somers on Tuesday….what to expect….everyone from Brewster gets a forfeit except maybe 5 wrestlers? We can do this match over the phone….why even waist the time of the Brewster team? This is just disgraceful!!!
i heard the youth program was being run by Max. The modified program is still around.
just wondering if there are any more box scores coming from yorktown?
I don’t hate the people that drove out Coach DiSanto! I just pity the fools!i
