Last season was filled with accomplishments for Hackley, as the Hornets had two wrestlers win state titles and placed in the top three as a team at the private school state championships. And while coach Fran Stanek lost the most successful wrestler in school history in five-time state champ Justin Seim, there is plenty left in the cupboard to continue the team’s upward trend. A strong junior class should ensure that Hackley remains a force for the next few seasons.
Here are Stanek’s responses:
How did your team do last season? Second place Ivy Preps; third place NY private school states; Dual meet record of 15-7.
Who are your top returning wrestlers? Xavier Carmona, Jr., 195/220 lbs (28-4; Ivy champ and second place at privates states; Xavier will be competing at Eastern States this year); Rodrigo Mejias, Jr., 182 lbs. (23-7; second at Ivy’s and second at privates states); Ben Jurcic, Sr., 285 lbs. (18-7; second at Ivy’s and second at private states); Andre Newland, Sr., 152 lbs.; Dan Shaw, Jr., 138 lbs.
Who are the top wrestlers that you lost to graduation? State champs Justin Seim (138 wins; 126 lbs.) and Will Johnson (182 lbs.). Justin is wrestling at Army and Will is doing crew at Dartmouth.
What is the biggest strength of your lineup? Full lineup with varsity experience.
What is your biggest concern entering the season? Staying healthy and focused.
Which team(s) is your biggest rival? Horace Mann.
Will you host any tournaments this season? Quad Meet with Stony Brook, Dobbs Ferry and Stepinac on January 12th.
