Everywhere you look in Rockland county, there are teams on the rise. Clarkstown South is certainly one of them, as the Vikings bring back nearly all of their significant pieces from last season. This is now a senior-heavy group with some guys who are ready to make names for themselves. Just like their rivals at Clarkstown North, numbers are up, which is always a promising sign for the future.
As you’ll be able to tell from his answers, coach Brenden Rogers is feeling optimistic:
How did your team do last season? Team duals: 9-14; 12 qualified for sectionals.
Who are your top returning wrestlers? Brian McLiverity, Sr., 113 lbs.; Austin Fox, Sr., 138; Sean Maloney, Sr., 152; Drew Breyfogle, Sr., 160; Paul Okeke, Sr., 195 (fifth in section); Matt Cummings, Sr., 220; Matt Ahle, Sr., 138; Nick Russo, Sr., 145.
Who are the top wrestlers that you lost to graduation? Tome Marku (fourth in section).
What is the biggest strength of your lineup? 160 lbs and up. We are three and four deep in the upper weights.
We have had many wrestlers work hard in the offseason. Some have joined wrestling clubs in NJ, others worked hard in our open mats and two made the NYS Freestyle and Greco Roman National team. We had a great camp last June at Hofstra University.
We have 50 wrestlers starting the season and will have a full JV schedule to compliment the varsity schedule. The Clarkstown South Vikings will be a pretty good team this year.
What is your biggest concern entering the season? Snow dates. I hope we have a winter like last year. There is no room for makeups.
Which team(s) is your biggest rival? Clarkstown North, our evil cousins.
Will you host any tournaments this season? JV Tournament on Dec. 29; Day one large school sectionals.
Next up: Happy Thanksgiving!
