Section 1 finals preview
We’re about a half away from the start of the finals for both Division 1 and Division 2. To get you ready, I’ve done some research to give you the recent history from each finals matchup. We had a few upsets in the semis, so there are some interesting matches that we weren’t really expecting.
Before we get to that, there were two semifinals matches that I figured you’d all want to see. In my opinion, these were basically championship matches. Here are the links to the videos that I took:
- At 113 pounds, Ossining’s Alex Delacruz pinned Somers’ Dylan Realbuto with 12 seconds remaining. It was a thrilling match, as Delacruz was losing 11-6 at the time of the pin. Realbuto had beaten him at the Eastern States Classic, 8-6.
- At 145 pounds, North Rockland’s Mike Caputo defeated John Jay-EF’s Dale White by decision, 3-2. White tied it at 1-1 with an escape to begin the third period, but Caputo picked up the only takedown of the match with about 45 seconds remaining. White escaped and got in on Caputo’s leg, but Caputo wouldn’t go down.
I’ll be taking videos of about half of the D1 finals, so I won’t be back on the blog with full results until everything has concluded. For updates throughout, follow me on Twitter @vzmercogliano.

Delacruz 24 second pin.
GRIPPI 8-0 OVER SREDNIKI
Vincent the score of the Delacruz/Realbuto match was 11-11 when the pin happened. you forgot the reversal and 3 back points leading up to the pin.
Delacruz was losing so no way it was 11-11, whatever the score was Alex was down a few already, gave up two and backs and on a reversal put him to his back and finished him.
Also, not to kick a kid when he’s down, but the pinned should have been called sooner. As crazy as it may sound, just saying :28 pin doesn’t do it justice. It was a double leg that had the gym rocking and the kid on his back immediately, might have been half the time.
Pride…your right about one thing…the match should have stopped earlier. Right after the two collided heads and Muldoon was standing defenseless, semi concious. Not taking anything away from delacruz at all. He wrestled great and I wish him good luck in the states, but it’s pretty disturbing that two refs and a table full of others and no one saw Muldoon was hurt and basically defenseless until he was motionless on the mat.
A very similar thing happened at sections three years ago. 189lb match. Porchester kid (I believe his name was Rodriguez??) where he went unconscious with a knee to the head. The refers were unaware of it.
correction,
At the time that Delacruz made the move for the takedown which led to the pin the score was 11-6. Yes, he would have received 5 points to tie it for the takedown and near fall, but the point is that he was losing by 5 when he made the move.
I know you all want to see videos, but I’ve already been at it for 12 hours today, and they’re going to take some time to upload. I’ll have all of those plus more reaction posted by sometime tomorrow afternoon.
I’m going to get some sleep. Goodnight everyone, and congrats to all of the wrestlers who competed this weekend. It was a lot of fun to be apart of.
Muldoon, was not unconscious. Defenseless because the better wrestler had him on his back, maybe. As for a “table full of others” would you like the tableworkers to stop every match when they see something they dont like? As for the Port Chester match three years ago, It was a heel to know the temple on a funk and the official stopped it relatively quick. 5 seconds or so after it occurred. I dont see an issue with either match/call.
Was Muldoon brought to the hospital? i saw no heads colliding. i saw a kid trying to fight off his back.
If the kid was motionless how did he fight off his back? Or has the “2 count” rule been extended to 20 count to give a kid s chance so he doesn’t get a quick loss in the final. I didn’t see any head-to-head contact, he looked to shoot under him. So if anything a grazing shot to the chin bit I didn’t even see that. MSG varsity will have the shot from opposite side of the tables. Either the kid was unconscious/motionless and the ref didn’t notice, the kid was stuck and the ref was slow to call it (or out of position, looked flat from far side) or something in between. Guess the video will some things up a bit.
Gable guy you’re a jerk off. I never said he was knocked unconscious and i wasn’t referring to “table workers” either. There were 2 refs on the mat and 2 more refs at the table. Muldoon took a shot to the face and was obviously pretty hurt. Watch the video for yourself, he was completely limp with his legs in the air.
Its called a blast double.
Snap down, why don’t you watch the video? it pretty obvious that he was trying to get off his back. Oh and right after the match Muldoon put his hand on his head in disgrace of losing, so before you come on here trying to give excuses, please look at the evidence.
for all you idiots that hide behind a keyboard with your stupid comments…the muldoon kid was taken to the hospital by his parents. the kid has a concussion and held his head because of it. his hands, arms and head were tingling because of lack of oxygen to his head. so before you go spewing your sh*t about what you don’t know about, why don’t call the family yourselves and find out.
Gotta think the hands to the head could have to do with either thing or both, not important. From some photos it appears that one shoulder was up a little and there was some movement, could have been from Delacruz adjusting for pin not clear. Also not 100% clear, I mean its not HD in slow-mo but it seems like their could have been a glancing head to chin blow. Tough for 4 refs to catch. You have one wrestler smothering another from the double, you can see a table worker pointing but it could be just pointing out a pin. It wasn’t the typical head-to-head both guys shooting at once scenario that refs usually catch.
Hope the best for muldoon, hope he isn’t too banged up
Congrats Alex
Hudsonvalleyhswrestling.com has the match.
De la cruz lowers his level, shoots a blast double. Right before he make impact muldoon lowers his level, probably thinking low single. their heads hits at impact, i watched it 2x in real time and couldnt tell looked like no head to head. I watched 3x in slo motion and thats when i could see the head to head. refs probably couldnt tell, either way, muldoon loses by pin or unable to continue with head injury.
@ Sect 1 A – i think you should watch the video. Obvious the kid was trying to get off his back??? He wasnt moving any of his limbs!! AND his eyes were closed because he was semi conscious. And after the match Muldoon put his hand to his head because he was disgraced??? That is a stupid ass comment and so far from what was REALLY going on. Muldoon has No Reason to feel disgraced after the awesome season he has had. The video is the evidence and YOU should take another look. There are no excuses to be made. The fact is that the pin was made against an opponent who was NOT fighting back because he was NOT fully conscious.
