Chat set for Wednesday/Divisional info • 01.30.12
For the first time this season, I’ll be hosting a LoHud Wrestling CoverItLive chat on Wednesday night at 7:30. The plan is to do this a few times in the next few weeks, which is why I wanted to give everyone a heads up. The more active people we have involved in the chat, the more often we’ll get the chance to have them. So spread the word!
The chat should last for about an hour, and it will give all of you the chance to ask questions and submit comments in real time. You can ask me about anything wrestling related (thoughts on the Super 16, RCCs, divisionals, sectionals, weight class rankings, section title picture, team standings, injury updates, etc.), or just throw your own opinions out there to keep the discussion going.
On the night of the chat, you will be able to find the link on our homepage (www.lohud.com), or just by logging onto the blog shortly before the chat is set to begin (or during). I’ll have more details posted on Wednesday, but I wanted to let everyone know about this exciting new opportunity we have to interact and expand our coverage.
Now, I have some information on this weekend’s divisional tournaments (aka sectional qualifiers). I’ll map out our coverage plans later in the week, but I do have the full lists of teams for each of the four locations. RCC-Super 16 tourney recaps with videos • 01.29.12
Now that the annual Rockland County Championships and Super 16 tournaments have come and gone, all of Section 1’s focus has shifted to divisionals this upcoming weekend. As the week goes on, I’ll have information on the four different locations and what to look for at each. In case you missed it, here is my story from the RCCs. And here is my colleague Rob Cristino’s story from the Super 16.
As sort of a preliminary look towards divisionals (and sectionals, for that matter), I figured I’d go from weight class to weight class and talk about the implications of yesterday’s action. One notable team that wasn’t at the Super 16 or RCCs was New Rochelle, who went up to the Big 10 Albany tournament and took first place in a field that featured the likes of Huntington, Queensbury, Burnt Hills, and Pine Bush. It was the first time in six years of attending the tourney that the Huguenots took first.
“I keep my fingers crossed being so far away with guys potentially getting hurt, but it’s been a good springboard tournament for us,” New Ro coach Jim Guccione said. “And it was again yesterday.”
Guccione sent 11 wrestlers, and each one of them placed. Ten finished in the top five, which tells me that the Huguenots seem to be peaking at the right time. I’ll get into how specific wrestlers did as I go through each weight class:
99 – None of the wrestlers in the top five of my Division 1 weight class rankings were present at either of the two local tourneys, so it’s hard to make too much of how things played out. Fox Lane’s Brendon Fay was just on the outside looking in of the top five, and as I predicted, he took care of business at the Super 16. He’ll certainly be in the mix to place at sectionals.
Nanuet’s Joe Dillon (pictured to the left) won a RCC championship, and now I’m sure he has his sights set on a potential rematch with Edgemont’s Tyler Aslanian in the D2 tourney after losing to him earlier in the season. He beat Clarkstown North’s Brian Hong in the final, who could make some noise in D1.
Top-ranked Nick Barbaria of New Rochelle took first place at Albany HS, beating Pine Bush’s Christopher Cuccolo in the final, 7-5. He’s still your favorite in D1.
106 – North Rockland’s Blaise Benderoth took his second consecutive title at the RCCs with a major decision over Suffern’s Alex Oliveto in the final. At this point, he looks pretty much locked in for a matchup with Brewster’s Mike Parise in a potential D1 section final. I have Parise ranked No. 1, but he’s never wrestled Benderoth before, so we still aren’t sure how they’ll match up.
Oliveto avenged a loss from earlier in the season to Nanuet’s Vinny Skokos to get to the final. Skokos took third, and still remains the favorite in D2.
Mahopac’s Mike DiNardo placed second to Center Moriches’ Michael Menzer at the Super 16. I have him ranked fifth in D1.
113 – Ossining’s Alex Delacruz took first at the Super 16, beating Hen Hud’s Mark Grant and Fox Lane’s Frank Surace along the way. He’s ranked No. 2 in D1, behind Somers’ Dylan Realbuto, so he was definitely expected to win here. Realbuto beat him at Eastern States.
The guy who could shake things up is Pearl River’s John Muldoon, who beat North Rockland’s Troy Feniger in the RCC finals. Those two are ranked third and fourth, respectively, and Muldoon hasn’t seen either of the top two. He looks like a lock for a top three finish.
120 – Nyack’s Adit Thakur barely survived an overtime scare against North Rockland’s Jake DiMarsico in the RCC finals, one week after pinning him at the Kohl tourney. His 3-1 win maintained his slight advantage over DiMarsico, who is ranked one spot behind Thakur at fourth in D1. That match looked like it could have went either way, though.
New Rochelle’s A.J. Barbaria is ranked No. 1, and he came away from the Albany tourney with a second place finish yesterday (he lost to an out-of-section kid from Queensbury). Remember, Barbaria beat Thakur in the Shoreline finals. The wild card will be second-ranked Liam Erickson from Brewster.
At the Super 16, Yorktown’s Jimmy Kaishian proved me right, going from the third seed to tourney champ. He beat Fox Lane’s Ben Ettlinger and Croton-Harmon’s D.J. Frederich (ranked No. 2 in D2) along the way, and should be a contender at sectionals. I have him ranked fifth, behind Barbaria, Erickson, Thakur and DiMarsico.
Frederich’s biggest competition in D2 is Nanuet’s Anthony Calvano, who I have ranked No. 1 in D2. Calvano has been out with a virus for quite some time and missed the RCCs, but Nanuet coach Carmine Serra told me that he fully expects him to be ready to go for sectionals. It will be interesting to see how he performs having not wrestled for most of the season.
126 – In one of the more intriguing matches of the day, Fox Lane’s Sam Speno beat Ardsley’s Drew Longo by decision (10-3) in the Super 16 final (pictured to the right). Both have previously placed at the state level, and I have them each ranked No. 1 (Speno in D1, Longo in D2). That match has no bearing on sectionals, but it’s kind of a neat in terms of Section 1 bragging rights. Speno probably won’t be challenged like that against any other wrestlers in the section.
At the RCCs, North Rockland’s Matt Caputo (ranked No. 2 in D1) took a title by pretty much breezing through the field. His pins in the semis and finals both came in under 45 seconds. He looks like he’s peaking at the right time, and probably has a good shot at qualifying for states even if he loses to Speno.
132 – Fox Lane’s Danny Ventura further cemented his status as the favorite here (he’s ranked No. 1 in D1) with a title at the Super 16. He majored Sleepy Hollow’s Edwin Jiminez (who I probably should have at least mentioned in my rankings) in the final, but Jiminez is definitely a name to watch. He beat Croton-Harmon’s David Occhipinti in the semis (4-3), who is a defending section champ in D2.
As I predicted when I released my rankings, Occhipinti seems like he’s going to go 132 for sectionals, rather than stay in an absolutely loaded weight class at 126. I’d call him the slight favorite over Nanuet’s Matt Dillon, who lost to Clarkstown North’s Colby Kash in the RCC finals. Kash, who I have ranked No. 3 in D1, has really come on strong of late. He’s as much of a threat to Ventura as anyone is.
138 – Perhaps the biggest story of the day was Mahopac’s Jake Srednicki getting a measure of revenge against Fox Lane’s Tom Grippi in the Super 16 finals. Grippi had beaten Srednicki (6-5) earlier in the season, which earned him the top ranking in D1. But Srednicki came up with an impressive showing on Saturday, displaying the ability to score on Grippi with much more efficiency than he had in their previous meeting. I’d have to call Srednicki the favorite at this point, not only because he won the more recent meeting, but because he also has a significant lead if you combine the two scores (19-13). Srednicki is built a bit thicker, and probably has more natural strength, which he can use to his advantage.
Suffern’s James Desimone shook things up at the RCCs, knocking off top-seeded Charlie Garcia of Tappan Zee in the final (Garcia is ranked third in D1, behind Grippi and Srednicki). Garcia had pinned him earlier in the season, but Desimone really seems to be progressing nicely. He also avenged a loss to Pearl River’s Steve Moreno earlier in the tourney.
145 – I said going into the Super 16 that I thought Yorktown’s Joe Mastro (pictured to the left) would emerge in a very deep field, and he did just that. Mastro knocked off Carmel’s Chris Pecora and Fox Lane’s Giancarlo Morreale (who is ranked fourth in D1) by a combined score of 21-3 to earn a title. He’s another guy who seems to be peaking at the right time.
The top three guys in D1 could probably match up with any top three in the state. North Rockland’s Mike Caputo (ranked No. 2) won an RCC title with relative ease, earning MOW honors. He’s looked like a man on a mission all season. At the Albany tourney, John Jay-EF’s Dale White (ranked No. 1) kept his strong season going with a first place finish. This should be a really fun weight class to watch at sectionals.
152 – None of the top three guys from my D1 rankings were active this weekend, and the fourth-ranked wrestler, Tappan Zee’s Desmond Djekovic, took care of business to win an RCC title.
At the Super 16, Carmel’s Vince Pecora came on strong to capture a title. He defeated Westlake’s Edgar Solis (ranked No. 2 in D2) for the title, and could be a guy who emerges to place high at sectionals. As we all know, the field is pretty wide open after Somers’ Brian Realbuto.
160 – With Hen Hud’s Phil Siegel dropping out of the Super 16 at the last second, we didn’t get to see the second meeting of the season between him and Fox Lane’s Matt Pasqualini. I’ll have to find out what’s going on with Siegel. Those are the top two guys in my D1 rankings, and Pasqualini beat Siegel at the Shoreline tourney earlier this season. That was probably a section final preview. Pasqualini took care of business, nearly coming up with a technical fall against Center Moriches’ Travis Baskerville for the title. He also beat fourth-ranked Devante Harrell from Ossining in the semis (who went onto lose to fifth-ranked Aaron Gallagher of Mahopac in the third place match).
Suffern’s Nick Giella, who is ranked third in D1, won a title at the RCCs.
170 – Yorktown’s Steven Sabella, who is ranked No. 1 in D1, lost an overtime heartbreaker to Center Moriches’ Mario Mayen in the Super 16 final, but still hasn’t lost to anyone ranked behind him in Section 1.
Perhaps more newsworthy was New Rochelle’s Aaron Butler’s return to the mat at the Albany tourney. He placed second, losing 11-7 to a wrestler from Queensbury in the final, but Guccione was thrilled that he made it through the tournament without any issues with his balky right shoulder. Guccione said that Butler was a bit rusty, but for the first time all season he didn’t have to use any injury time throughout an entire tournament. As a defending section champ, he could jump to the top of the rankings if he’s healthy.
At the RCCs, Tappan Zee’s Valdon Djekovic made a bit of a statement with a title. There were no ranked wrestlers present in his weight class, but this field should be pretty wide open at sectionals.
182 –Top-ranked Jacob Berkowitz of Scarsdale was inactive this weekend, but Yorktown’s Thomas Murray (ranked No. 2 in D1) made it to the Super 16 finals. He lost in OT to Center Moriches’ Bilal Hasan, but he still looks like Berko’s top challenger. Carmel’s A.J. Alvarez, who recently earned his 100th career win by beating fourth-ranked Michael Amato of Beacon, placed third.
At the RCCs, North Rockland’s Ryan Boyle upset top-seeded Tome Marku of Clarkstown South in the final.
195 – Mahopac’s Mike Spinelli survived a tough test against Center Moriches’ Ryan Lewis in the Super 16 finals, coming away with a 5-1 decision. He’s ranked No. 1 in D1, and has been pretty consistent throughout the season. There were no other ranked wrestlers at the Super 16 in this weight class.
At the RCCs, Dan Breit (ranked No. 1 in D2) showed once again that he’s probably the second-best wrestler in this weight class in the entire section with a major decision over Clarkstown South’s Paul Okeke (ranked fifth in D1) in the finals.
220 – The biggest statement from any Section 1 wrestler came from New Rochelle’s Tyler Lilly (ranked No. 2 in D1) at the Albany tourney. Lilly defeated Huntington’s Nick Lupi, who is the top-ranked wrestler at 220 in Section 11, by decision (4-2) to earn a title. That’s a signature win for Lilly, who is aiming for top-ranked Dom DeVita of Somers. DeVita beat him in OT at Eastern States, which makes that section final a potential must-watch.
Tappan Zee’s Chris McGann came up with a huge upset win over Suffern’s Bryan Burger (ranked No. 3 in D1) in the RCC finals. Burger had pinned McGann earlier this season, and according to McGann, he was 0-3 with three pins against Burger for his career. A big win in a crucial moment for McGann, who you could certainly make a solid case for to be ranked.
At the Super 16, Fox Lane’s Dan Clune (No. 5 in D1) took a title with a decision (8-2) over Irvington’s Chris DiNardo in the final. DiNardo, who won a D2 section title last season at 285, looks like he’ll be going 220 at sectionals this season. He missed a ton of time due to injury, but he should challenge Edgemont’s Danny Kornberg (No. 1 in D2).
285 – In one of the more highly anticipated matches of the day, the top two ranked wrestlers in D1 faced off for the third time this season in the Super 16 finals. Hen Hud’s Sean Barry (ranked No. 1) rebounded from an OT loss to Yorktown’s David Varian (ranked No. 2) at the Kohl tourney last week, this time coming away with a 7-5 decision. He’s definitely the favorite at this point, but Varian has shown he can compete over the course of the past week. After giving up a first period pin to Barry earlier in the season, Varian has kept it close in their last two meetings.
Those are the clear top two guys in D1, but beyond that the picture gets a bit cloudy. There’s about five or six guys you could make a case for to be ranked third. Tappan Zee’s Michael Manni (ranked No. 4) captured a title at the RCCs, so he’s definitely in the mix. But after Varian pinned Fox Lane’s Andriy Lypchuk (ranked No. 3) in the third period of the semifinals, Lypchuk was pinned in the first period by Sleepy Hollow’s Frank Curnaj. Curnaj was another name I mentioned in my rankings, which tells you how interesting this weight class should be.

Weekend tourney predictions • 01.27.12
To get everyone ready for the Super 16 and Rockland County Championship tournaments this weekend, I’ve gone through the seeds for each and come up with some predictions. There are some strong wrestlers in the 3-6 range at the Super 16, which could lead to some upsets, but the RCC seeds seem a bit more cut and dry.
I’ll be at Tappan Zee for the RCCs, and my colleague Rob Cristino will be at Carmel for the Super 16. The finals at the RCCs are supposed to begin around 5 p.m., with the Super 16 shooting for 4 p.m. Follow me on Twitter @vzmercogliano for updates.
Super 16
99: No. 2 Brendon Fay (Fox Lane) over No. 1 Andrew Barsuch (Croton-Harmon) – Fay majored Barsuch in the beginning of the season. Also watch out for Mahopac’s Joe Frezza.
106: No. 1 M. Menzer (Center Moriches) over No. 2 Mike DiNardo (Mahopac) – DiNardo is ranked fifth in my power rankings, but Menzer is a strong out of section wrestler. Also watch out for Hen Hud’s Jack Wagner.
113: No. 1 Alex Delacruz (Ossining) over No. 3 Zack Boker (Mahopac) – Delacruz is ranked second, and Boker fifth. Delacruz looks like a guy who should qualify for states. Also look out for Fox Lane’s Frank Surace.
120: No. 3 Jimmy Kaishian (Yorktown) over No. 1 D.J. Frederich (Croton-Harmon) – Both Kaishian and Frederich have impressive wins over Delacruz, but have not seen each other this season. Also look out for Fox Lane’s Ben Ettlinger, who beat Frederich (12-9) in the beginning of the season. He’d just have to get past Kaishian to see him.
126: No. 1 Sam Speno (Fox Lane) over No. 2 Drew Longo (Ardsley) – This is a very juicy matchup between two previous state placers and likely section champs in D1 and D2. Other than B-Real, but Speno might be the best pound-for-pound wrestler in the section. Also watch out for Harrison’s Gavin Menchel.
132: No. 1 Danny Ventura (Fox Lane) over No. 2 David Occhipinti (Croton-Harmon) – Again, we’ve got a matchup featuring likely section champs from D1 and D2. Also look out for Sleepy Hollow’s Edwin Jiminez.
138: No. 1 Tom Grippi (Fox Lane) over No. 3 Jake Srednicki (Mahopac) – This is one of the best potential matchups of the day, in what should be a preview of the D1 section final. Grippi beat Srednicki by one point at the Mahopac Duals, so Srednicki will have plenty of incentive to even the score. Also look out for Westlake’s Dean Rogener.
145: No. 3 Joe Mastro (Yorktown) over No. 1 Giancarlo Morreale (Fox Lane) – These two haven’t seen each other yet this season, but Mastro has been on fire recently. I think he’s the hottest hand in a very deep field. I also like sixth-seeded Josh Perlmutter from Hen Hud, who was pinned by Mastro and beaten by Morreale (4-2) this season.
152: No. 1 Edgar Solis (Westlake) over No. 3 Vince Pecora (Carmel) – Solis, a defending section champ in D2, should benefit from a field that doesn’t include many contenders from D1. Also look out for Hen Hud’s Lance Perlmutter.
160: No. 1 Matt Pasqualini (Fox Lane) over No. 2 Phil Siegel (Hen Hud) – In another probable section final preview, Siegel gets another shot at Pasqualini after losing to him at the Shoreline (8-5).
170: No. 2 Steven Sabella (Yorktown) over No. 1 M. Mayen (Center Moriches) – Admittedly, I don’t know much about Mayen, but Sabella is ranked No. 1 in my power rankings.
182: No. 1 Thomas Murray (Yorktown) over No. 3 A.J. Alvarez (Carmel) – This is a matchup that could be very telling in regards to who is Scarsdale’s Jacob Berkowitz’s biggest competition for a section title. Murray beat Alvarez earlier in the season (6-3).
195: No. 1 Mike Spinelli (Mahopac) over No. 2 R. Lewis (Center Moriches) – This is a chance for a likely section champ in Spinelli to make a statement against some tough, out of section competition. Also look out for Ossining’s Trent Lofaro.
220: No. 2 Dan Clune (Fox Lane) over No. 1 Chris DiNardo (Irvington) – DiNardo is a defending section champ in D2, but he missed most of the season due to injury, and hasn’t seemed to find his stride yet.
285: No. 1 Sean Barry (Hen Hud) over No. 2 David Varian (Yorktown) – Another possible section final preview. These have been the clear-cut top two guys in Section 1 this season, and they’ve split leading up to this point. Barry pinned him earlier in the season, and then Varian upset him in OT in the Kohl tourney final. Barry will come into this one on a mission. Also look out for Fox Lane’s Andriy Lypchuk in a deep field.
Rockland County Championships
99: No. 1 Joe Dillon (Nanuet) over No. 2 Brian Hong (Clarkstown North) – Dillon is a defending Division 2 section champ and placed third at the RCCs last season, but is in good position for a title this time around. He majored Hong earlier this season. Hong beat third-seeded Derek DiMarsico of North Rockland, 9-0.
106: No. 1 Blaise Benderoth (North Rockland) over No. 2 Vinny Skokos (Nanuet) – Benderoth won a title last season here at 96 pounds, and should have a chance at accumulating a few more before he’s done. He’s beaten Skokos twice, but Skokos was much more competitive in their more recent meeting. Skokos has a win over third-seeded Alex Oliveto from Suffern (10-7).
113: No. 1 John Muldoon (Pearl River) over No. 2 Troy Feniger (North Rockland) – Muldoon placed second here last season at 96, but seems to have risen to another level this season. He has no losses in the county, including a 9-7 win over Feniger at the Shoreline tourney. Muldoon also pinned third-seeded Brian McLiverty from Clarkstown South.
120: No. 1 Adit Thakur (Nyack) over No. 2 Jake DiMarsico (North Rockland) – Thakur hasn’t lost in the county this season, including a pin of DiMarsico last week at the Kohl tourney. He’s in the mix for a section title. Clarkstown North’s Dean Guevarra could be a sleeper.
126: No. 1 Matt Caputo (North Rockland) over No. 2 Austin Fox (Clarkstown South) – Caputo placed third last season at 112, and seems to have a great shot at a title this year. Fox’s only loss in the county came against Thakur, so don’t sleep on him.
132: No. 2 Colby Kash (Clarkstown North) over No. 1 Matt Dillon (Nanuet) – This is one of the rare instances where I don’t think the top seed will win at the RCCs. Kash has come on strong of late, winning the Beacon tourney, as well as beating North Rockland’s Matt Caputo and Suffern’s Dan DeStefano. Dillon may be the favorite in his weight class in D2, but he’s got a tough road here.
138: No. 1 Charlie Garcia (Tappan Zee) over No. 3 Steve Moreno (Pearl River) – Garcia hasn’t lost in the county and enters as the clear-cut top guy. Moreno only has one loss in the county, but it came against… you guessed it, Garcia (3-1).
145: No. 1 Mike Caputo (North Rockland) over No. 2 Ryan Becker (Clarkstown North) – Caputo is a heavy favorite here after winning a title at 140 last season. Becker was pinned by Caputo earlier this season. Also look out for Suffern’s Dan DeStefano.
152: No. 1 Desmond Djekovic (Tappan Zee) over No. 2 Sean Maloney (Clarkstown South) – Djekovic enters as the slight favorite after placing third at 145 last season, but don’t sleep on Maloney. He’s quietly had a strong season, and has yet to see Djekovic, so we’re not sure how they match up. Don’t forget about North Rockland’s Nick Didio either, who lost by one point to Djekovic earlier this season.
160: No. 1 Nick Giella (Suffern) over No. 2 David Crispino (Clarkstown North) – Giella placed second at 152 last season, and is a pretty clear favorite here. He hasn’t seen Crispino yet this season. Another name to watch is Nanuet’s Mike Buhlmann, but Giella pinned him, and Crispino beat him 3-1.
170: No. 3 Bryant Quichiz (Suffern) over No. 1 Peter Smith (Nanuet) – This is a pretty wide open weight class, but I really liked the way that Quichiz battled Yorktown’s Steven Sabella (my No. 1 at 170) in the Kohl tourney finals last weekend. He also has a 3-0 win over Smith this season.
182: No. 1 Tome Marku (Clarkstown South) over No. 2 Ryan Boyle (North Rockland) – Marku hasn’t wrestled for the full season, but he has no losses listed on nwcaonline.com. Boyle beat third-seeded Kevin Brundage of Nanuet twice this season.
195: No. 1 Dan Breit (Nanuet) over No. 3 Paul Okeke (Clarkstown South) – Breit is my No. 1 in D2 and definitely the favorite here, but this is a pretty deep weight class. Okeke hasn’t lost in a month, and recently handed Suffern’s Bryan Burger his first loss of the season in the county. Don’t sleep on second-seeded Ekpenede Imasuen of North Rockland, either.
220: No. 1 Bryan Burger (Suffern) over No. 2 Chris McGann (Tappan Zee) – Burger is the man to beat here, having already pinned McGann this season (he also pinned fourth-seeded Jason Dorsainville of East Ramapo). McGann has also pinned Dorsainville, as well as beaten third-seeded Sergio Ventura of Nanuet (5-2).
285: No. 1 Michael Manni (Tappan Zee) over No. 2 Josh Nelson (Nanuet) – Manni has wins over each of the three wrestlers seeded directly behind him, but he did split with fourth-seeded Charles Francois from Nyack. That could be a stumbling point in the semis, but he’s been very strong recently, most notably with a title at the Beacon tourney. He’s already pinned Nelson this season.

Notebook/Thursday’s schedule • 01.26.12
This week’s notebook focused on Brewster seniors Mike Parise and Jimmy Duncan, who are pretty much neck and neck on the Bears’ all-time wins list. Duncan broke the record late last season, but Parise recently passed him at the Shenendehowa tounrnament (Parise currently has 159 wins, and Duncan has 157). It’s kind of a unique situation, and both have been very supportive with each other. More importantly, those two (along with a strong group of upperclassmen from Brewster have really helped raise the level of program, which culminated when they won the Section 1 Dual Meet championship earlier in the season.
The notebook also includes information on the Super 16 and Rockland County Championships, as well as a couple of local wrestlers who recently reached 100 career wins. The seedings for the two big tourneys are being determined later today, so hopefully I’ll have them posted by the end of the night. Here is the link to the notebook.
And here is Thursday’s schedule:
New Rochelle at Yonkers, 4:15 p.m.
Mamaroneck at Scarsdale, 4:15 p.m.
Carmel at Beacon, 4:30 p.m.
Arlington at Brewster, 4:30 p.m.
Hen Hud at Pawling, 4:30 p.m.
Somers at Mahopac, 4:30 p.m.
East Ramapo at Clarkstown North, 4:30 p.m.
North Rockland at Suffern, 4:30 p.m.
Hackley at Croton-Harmon, 4:30 p.m.
Sleepy Hollow at White Plains, 4:45 p.m.
RC Ketcham at John Jay-EF, 5:15 p.m.
Weight class rankings: Postseason edition • 01.25.12
At long last, I’ve finalized our complete LoHud weight class rankings for both Division 1 and Division 2. With the Super 16 and Rockland County Championships set for this weekend, followed by sectional qualifiers the following weekend, these rankings should serve as a great reference for sectionals. The idea is that if you look back at these after sectionals are completed on Feb. 12 at Pace University, these are the names that should be making it to the podium.
Before I give you the rankings, I wanted to post a few ground rules to give everyone an idea of how I put these together.
- As I’ve been doing for the past two seasons, I picked the top five in each weight class from D1, and the top three in D2. I’ve also added names of wrestlers who just missed the cut in my notes, which follow the rankings from each weight class.
- I do take into consideration past performances (such as previous section titles, section placers, etc.), but I put more stock into how a wrestler has performed this season. Quality wins, performance at competitive tourneys, overall record, pin percentage, difficulty of schedule and head-to-head are all taken into consideration.
- A wrestler cannot be ranked directly ahead of another wrestler who he has a losing record against this season. For example, if Wrestler A is ranked third and Wrestler B is ranked fourth, but Wrestler B beat Wrestler A this season, I would flop them. But if Wrestler A was ranked second due to a more impressive overall performance, and Wrestler B was ranked fourth with a win over Wrestler A, I would leave them as is.
- If two wrestlers split, I give preference to whichever won the more recent meeting UNLESS the other wrestler’s body of work is obviously stronger.
- I will reference the Eastern States Classic tournament quite a bit in these rankings. I abbreviated it as “ESC.”
- Whenever I reference a head-to-head meeting, it is from this season, unless specified otherwise.
- The records listed for each wrestler come directly from nwcaonline.com. Most of them seem to be accurate, but if there was nothing listed or the record simply didn’t seem right, I listed it as “N/A.”
Here we go…
Division 1
99
1. Nick Barbaria, New Rochelle (23-4, 8 pins)
2. Kevin Rodriguez, Port Chester (23-5, 14 pins)

4. Gavin Menchel, Harrison (23-6, 16 pins)
5. Tommy Gonska, Brewster (32-4, 17 pins)
Notes: Also look out for Mahopac’s Mike Camastro and RC Ketcham’s Danny Murphy… Speno looks like he has a strong shot for a state title after placing second at 112 last season… He teched Menchel… Caputo’s most notable win is a major decision over Nanuet’s Anthony Calvano (No. 1 in D2 at 120)… Russo beat Menchel (7-0) and Gonska (3-1)… Menchel beat Gonska (11-3)… Murphy has come on strong of late, including a win over Russo (7-4).

4. Giancarlo Morreale, Fox Lane (26-4, 9 pins)
5. Josh Perlmutter, Hen Hud (14-3, 9 pins)
Notes: Also look out for Carmel’s Chris Pecora and Clarkstown North’s Ryan Becker… I believe that you could make the argument that this may be the deepest weight class in the section (which surely has to do with guys coming down to avoid B-Real at 152)… White placed second at the ESC, and Caputo placed fourth… White pinned Mastro and beat Morreale (6-3)… Caputo and Mastro each pinned Perlmutter… Caputo pinned Becker… Mastro majored Pecora… Morreale beat Perlmutter (4-2)… Perlmutter beat Pecora (6-3) and Becker (6-5)… Pecora beat Becker in the Beacon finals (7-4).
152
1. Brian Realbuto, Somers (N/A)
2. Ben Miller, Mamaroneck (30-2, 21 pins)
3. Brad Marvin, RC Ketcham (28-13, 9 pins)
4. Desmond Djekovic, Tappan Zee (26-4, 13 pins)
5. Kyle McAlpin, Brewster (32-10, 14 pins)
Notes: Another name to watch is John Jay-EF’s Aaron Johnson… As a two-time state champ, Realbuto is undoubtedly the man here… He pinned Miller with three seconds remaining on Dec. 2… Marvin is 2-1 vs. McAlpin… He also beat Djekovic in the Beacon tourney final (7-2)… McAlpin and Johnson split (McAlpin won most recent meeting).
160
1. Matt Pasqualini, Fox Lane (32-4, 23 pins)
2. Phil Siegel, Hen Hud (22-2, 10 pins)
3. Nick Giella, Suffern (23-3, 13 pins)
4. DeVante Harrell, Ossining (20-3, 13 pins)
5. Aaron Gallagher, Mahopac (15-5, 14 pins)
Notes: Another name to watch is Arlington’s Anthony Scott… Pasqualini beat Siegel at Shoreline (8-5)… Pasqualini placed second at 145 last season, while Siegel placed second at 152, so they form a pretty clear-cut top two… Pasqualini placed fifth at the ESC… Siegel beat Giella at the Kohl tourney (11-7).
170
1. Steven Sabella, Yorktown (30-1, 17 pins)
2. Brendan Nunziata, Arlington (23-5, 12 pins)

4. Jack Braun, Scarsdale (31-2, 14 pins)
5. Brett Perry, John Jay-EF (27-8, 9 pins)
Notes: Another name to watch is Brewster’s Harry Erickson… Sabella beat Nunziata (3-2), Braun (7-1) and Perry (2-1)… Nunziata beat Butler in OT at the Shoreline… To be fair, four of Butler’s losses came on injury defaults, and the fifth came against Nunziata when he continued wrestling after his right shoulder popped out. At full strength, he would be the favorite as a defending champ at 160, but he has had an ongoing shoulder issue… Butler beat Braun and majored Erickson… Perry beat Erickson twice.
182
1. Jacob Berkowitz, Scarsdale (38-2, 12 pins)
2. Thomas Murray, Yorktown (29-2, 15 pins)

Notes: Another name to watch is Somers’ Jason DiBenedetto… Berko is the clear favorite after winning a section title at 171 last season… Murray beat Alvarez (6-3) and pinned Amato; he’s also beaten DiBenedetto three times… Rosenthal is 2-1 vs. Alvarez… Amato beat Alvarez at the Beacon tourney (3-1)… Alvarez and Rosenthal each beat DiBendetto… DiBenedetto beat Amato (8-6).

2. Tyler Lilly, New Rochelle (23-4, 10 pins)
3. Bryan Burger, Suffern (18-2, 9 pins)
4. Justin Conahan, Arlington (15-1, 11 pins)

4. Michael Manni, Tappan Zee (21-7, 12 pins)

Notes: Also look out for Beacon’s Thomas Korzewinski and Sleepy Hollow’s Frank Curnaj… Barry pinned Lypchuk, Vanderline and Korzewinski… He also beat Manni twice… Barry and Varian split this season, and although Varian’s win is more recent, Barry has the more impressive overall body of work… Varian pinned Vanderline, Korzewinski and Curnaj… After the top two, it’s pretty wide open… Lypchuk pinned Manni… Manni pinned Vanderline and Korzewinski at the Beacon tourney… Vanderline pinned Korzewinski… Korzewinski pinned Lypchuk.
Division 2
99
1. Tyler Aslanian, Edgemont (24-6, 13 pins)
2. Joe Dillon, Nanuet (23-6, 12 pins)
3. Andrew Barsuch, Croton-Harmon (30-9, 22 pins)
Notes: Another name to watch is Hastings’ Nick Wilt… This is a very interesting weight class… Aslanian beat Dillon (7-4)… Aslanian and Barsuch split (Aslanian won most recent match)… Dillon is the defending champ here and placed eighth this season at the ESC.
106
1. Vinny Skokos, Nanuet (24-8, 10 pins)
2. Sky Korek, Edgemont (21-8, 10 pins)
3. Jonah Gerstel, Ardsley (N/A)
Notes: Another name to watch is Irvington’s Tyler Wexler… As a freshman in his first season in the lineup, Skokos has emerged as the favorite. Some of his notable wins include decisions over N. Barbaria (No. 1 in D1 at 99) and Oliveto (No. 4 in D1 at 106)… Skokos pinned Korek… Korek and Gerstal each pinned Wexler.
113
1. Trey Aslanian, Edgemont (32-1, 18 pins)
2. Stephen Paternostro, Pleasantville (26-6, 16 pins)
3. Stephen Samolsky, Ardsley (19-3, 16 pins)
Notes: Another name to watch is Putnam Valley’s Adam Mirabal… Aslanian is the clear favorite after placing second in the state last season at 103… He has notable wins over Muldoon (No. 3 in D1 at 113) and Feniger (No. 4 in D1 at 113).
120
1. Anthony Calvano, Nanuet (13-3, 10 pins)
2. D.J. Frederich, Croton-Harmon (29-5, 16 pins)
3. Josh Dooz, Dobbs Ferry (27-6, 12 pins)
Notes: Another name to watch is Edgemont’s Max Abramsky… Calvano is a multiple state qualifier, but he’s missed time with various ailments… Frederich has come on strong, most notably splitting with Delacruz (No. 2 in D1 at 113). You could easily make a case for him to be No. 1… Calvano’s most notable win came vs. J. DiMarsico (No. 4 in D1 at 120)… Frederich pinned Dooz and Abramsky.
126
1. Drew Longo, Ardsley (22-3, 13 pins)
2. David Occhipinti, Croton-Harmon (28-3, 19 pins)
3. Jimmy Kyreakedes, Dobbs Ferry (9-4, 8 pins)
Notes: This weight class is absolutely loaded. Kyreakedes placed at the state level last season, which tells you how talented this top three is. All three won section titles last season… Longo beat Occhipinti (7-1) and Kyreakedes (7-6)… Occhipinti has gone 132 most of the season, but he’s listed at 126 and wrestled there at the ESC. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him jump up to 132 for sectionals, where he would have an easier path to a section title… He beat Kyreakedes (8-7)… Kyreakedes recently returned from injury, and didn’t quite look 100 percent at the Kohl tourney.
132
1. Matt Dillon, Nanuet (21-8, 6 pins)
2. Chris Bruno, Putnam Valley (22-12, 12 pins)
3. Colin Hopkins, Edgemont (14-9, 9 pins)
Notes: Another name to watch is Pleasantville’s Graham Williamson… If no one else bumps up, Dillon is the favorite after placing second at 119 last season… He majored Hopkins… Bruno beat Williamson (12-6).
138
1. Dean Rogener, Westlake (N/A)
2. Peter Berman, Edgemont (17-18, 6 pins)
3. Kyle Kelvas, Putnam Valley (18-15, 11 pins)
Notes: Also look out for Irvington’s Drew Cohen and Croton-Harmon’s J.P. O’Malley… Rogener recently returned from injury… He pinned Kelvas earlier in the season, and also has a notable win over M. Dillon (3-0)… Berman beat Cohen twice… Berman has gone through a much tougher schedule than any other wrestler in this class… Kelvas beat Cohen (7-1) and O’Malley (3-1)… Cohen and O’Malley split (O’Malley won most recent meeting).
145
1. Brett Pastore, Irvington (19-4, 11 pins)
2. Jack McCormack, Edgemont (19-9, 6 pins)
3. Johnny Martin, Croton-Harmon (26-8, 17 pins)
Notes: Also look out for Hastings’ Brandon Abrahante and Westlake’s Nick O’Halloran… This is one of the deeper weight classes in D2… Pastore is the favorite after placing second at 130 last season (he lost to eventual state champ Ryan Osleeb in the final)… Pastore beat McCormack twice, Martin (7-0), and Abrahante by pin… McCormack beat Abrahante (5-2).
152
1. Scott Porter, Pawling (29-2, 25 pins)
2. Edgar Solis, Westlake (18-7, 6 pins)
3. Ross Kantor, Edgemont (14-11, 13 pins)
Notes: Solis is a defending champ at 145, but Porter pinned him earlier this season… Porter split with Miller (No. 2 in D1 at 152)… Notable wins for Solis include Harrell (No. 4 in D1 at 160) and splitting with Djekovic (No. 4 in D1 at 152)… This pretty much looks like a two-man race.
160
1. Mike Boyle, Dobbs Ferry (17-1, 9 pins)
2. Mike Buhlman, Nanuet (22-11, 7 pins)
3. Peter Salzarulo, Pleasantville (20-10, 11 pins)
Notes: Another name to watch is Edgemont’s Oliver Oks, who is expected to be back from injury in time for sectionals… None of these four have wrestled each other, except when Buhlmann beat Oks in the Section 1 Dual Meet championship by injury default… I had Oks ranked No. 1 in the beginning of the season, so I expect him to be a factor… Boyle has a notable win over Pastore.
170
1. John Messinger, Putnam Valley (N/A)
2. Peter Smith, Nanuet (14-15, 5 pins)
3. Constantine Coffinas, Westlake (13-8, 5 pins)
Notes: Another name to watch is Edgemont’s Jason Worobow, whose status is still up in the air for sectionals as he is dealing with an ongoing shoulder issue… This weight class is pretty much wide open, but Messinger did place third at 171 last season… He recently returned to the lineup after missing time earlier in the season… Smith majored Coffinas.
182
1. Oliver Mold, Pawling (27-2, 17 pins)
2. Kevin Brundage, Nanuet (22-8, 12 pins)
3. Chris Kim, Edgemont (13-10, 8 pins)
Notes: Mold is a heavy favorite here after winning a title at 171 last season… He has notable wins over Murray (No. 2 in D1 at 182), Kraft (No. 2 in D2 at 195) and Deleon (No. 3 in D2 at 195).
195
1. Dan Breit, Nanuet (32-4, 12 pins)
2. Chris Kraft, Croton-Harmon (27-4, 14 pins)
3. Dennis Deleon, Dobbs Ferry (20-5, 9 pins)
Notes: Another name to watch is Irvington’s Kevin Degnan… Breit is the slight favorite in a very deep weight class… He placed second at 189 last season, and placed sixth at the ESC this season… He has notable wins over Kornberg (No. 1 in D2 at 220) and Okeke (No. 5 in D1 at 195)… Kraft and Deleon split (Kraft won more recent meeting)… Kraft and Degnan split (Kraft won more recent meeting)… Deleon beat Degnan twice.
220
1. Danny Kornberg, Edgemont (34-9, 21 pins)
2. Quentin Bailey, Hastings (17-3, 7 pins)
3. Alek Pavloff, Croton-Harmon (21-10, 14 pins)
Notes: Another name to watch is Nanuet’s Sergio Ventura… He’s wrestled more matches at 220, but is listed at 195, so he could be a factor in either weight class… Kornberg beat Ventura (5-0) and pinned Pavloff… He’s the favorite after placing fourth at 215 last season… Bailey is the great unknown because he hasn’t seen any of these guys.
285
1. Obum Anyichie, Pleasantville (27-2, 11 pins)
2. Chris DiNardo, Irvington (N/A)
3. Anthony DiNardo, Irvington (15-7, 5 pins)
Notes: Another name to watch is Westlake’s Mike Manzo… Anyichie lost to C. DiNardo in last season’s section final, but he has beaten him twice in the past week and a half… He also pinned A. DiNardo twice, Manzo once and has a win over Lypchuk (No. 3 in D1 at 285)… C. DiNardo missed almost the entire season with an injury. He recently returned, but doesn’t seem to be wrestling at the level he was at last season… Anthony is Chris’ younger brother.

There’s a pretty light schedule on tap for Tuesday, but I also wanted to update you guys on the status of my new weight class rankings. Look for those to be posted sometime tomorrow afternoon.

Stepinac at Woodlands, 4:15 p.m.
Dobbs Ferry at Byram Hills, 4:15 p.m.

Weekend tourney recap with videos • 01.23.12
There were several matches the Kohl Invitational at Suffern on Sunday which had major implications on individual section title races, and none more so than the 285-pound final between Yorktown’s David Varian and Hen Hud’s Sean Barry. Coming into the match, Barry had yet to lose this season, and was looking like a dominant force in the super heavyweight ranks. A few weeks ago, he pinned Varian in the first period, knocking off the wrestler who was widely considered to be his biggest challenger for a section title entering the season. But Varian showed resiliency and the ability to make adjustments based on his opponent’s tendencies at the Kohl tourney.
After Varian’s 3-2 overtime upset win (pictured to the right), both Varian and Yorktown coach John Tornambe talked about how much they focused on avoiding Barry’s headlock move. He’s notorious for aggressively grabbing his opponent’s head and throwing his hips into them for a takedown in one full motion. Varian called it, “probably the most dangerous move in the state,” among guys in their weight class. So for Varian, it was all about avoiding that move.
“We know when we wrestle him, his offense comes off of that headlock,” Tornambe said. “We knew if we could stay away from that, it would be close.”
Varian didn’t have many opportunities to shoot against Barry, but he did do an excellent job of staying low and using his hands to fend Barry off before he could get his arms around his head. The result was a slow-paced match in which neither wrestler could pick up points on anything other than an escape—an unfamiliar position for Barry. They traded escapes in the second and third periods, which sent the match to OT tied at 1-1.
“I have great confidence in my conditioning,” Varian said. “And it paid off big here.”
Again, they exchanged escape points in OT, but Varian eventually won it on a hand clasping call against Barry. It certainly wasn’t the prettiest win, but it was enough for Varian to prove to the rest of Section 1 that Barry doesn’t necessarily have a title locked up yet.
The ‘Huskers ended up with four individual champs, and all four are proving to be legitimate section title contenders.
Joe Mastro (145) put on a clinic in the final against Monroe-Woodbury’s AJ Voelker, who is the top-ranked wrestler in his weight class from Section 9. He had completely tired Voelker out by the third period, and was picking up takedowns at will on his way to an 18-2 technical fall. His weight class is extremely deep in Section 1 (John Jay-EF’s Dale White and North Rockland’s Mike Caputo come to mind), but he’s certainly near the top of the list.
Steven Sabella (170) earned a hard fought title with a 3-1 win over Suffern’s Bryant Quichiz, and Thomas Murray (182) picked up a huge 9-3 win over Somers’ Jason DiBenedetto in their final (pictured to the left), disposing of a guy who has been one of the stronger wrestlers in that weight class. Make no mistake about it, Yorktown has some names to watch come sectional time.
The one guy for the ‘Huskers who was probably a bit disappointed with his showing was Jimmy Kaishian at 120 pounds. That was a very deep weight class, and Kaishian ran into North Rockland’s Jake DiMarsico in the semis. DiMarsico made his case to move up in the rankings with a 6-2 win, but the day ultimately belonged to Nyack’s Adit Thakur. Thakur pinned DiMarsico in the third period of their final, establishing himself as the likely top seed at next weekend’s Rockland County Championship. That weight class is still pretty open when you talk about the section title picture, with Thakur, New Rochelle’s A.J. Barbaria and Brewster’s Liam Erickson looking like the leading contenders. Remember, Barbaria beat Thakur in the Shoreline finals.
Suffern placed second as a team, higher than any other Section 1 team. Alex Oliveto (106) and Bryan Burger (220) each took titles, while Dan DeStefano (2nd at 132), Bryant Quichiz (2nd at 170), James Desimone (3rd at 138), and Nick Giella (3rd at 160) also came up big.
Burger is an especially interesting case at 220, having not lost a match in Section 1 all season. He picked up a pin before you could even blink against Monroe-Woodbury’s Jorge Vasco in the final, and is kind of a great unknown heading into sectionals. Somers’ Dom DeVita is probably the top guy in that weight class right now, but DeVita sat out of the Kohl due to a strained elbow. Somers coach William Von Tobel told me that if this were a sectional tournament, DeVita would have been a go, but they wanted to play it safe and allow him the proper time to recover this late in the season.
Just like Yorktown, Somers came away with four individual champs. The Realbutos (Dylan at 113, and Brian at 160) each bounced back from second place finishes at Eastern States with titles at the Kohl, while Larry Courtien (138) and Nick Giancaspro (195) also earned titles. Courtien is a guy who has sort of come out of nowhere this season. He’s a natural athlete who seems to have fully committed to wrestling recently, and we’re seeing the results.
For those of you who are wondering about B-Real wrestling at 160, he confirmed with me after the finals that he will be at 152 for sectionals. The field was probably tougher at 160 in this tournament, so it made more sense for Realbuto to move up to test himself. He picked up a second period pin of Hen Hud’s Phil Siegel in the final.
Here are some videos that I took from the finals:
- Thakur pins DiMarsico in the 120-pound final.
- B. Realbuto pins Siegel in the 160-pound final.
- I got video of Varian’s win over Barry, but because of all of the OT periods, YouTube is telling me that the video is too long. I’m going to have to try to figure out another way to post it.

Weekend tourneys being pushed back • 01.20.12
Due to the anticipated inclement weather on Saturday, we have some postponements for a few of this weekend’s tournaments. So far, I’ve received confirmation that both the Kohl Invitational tournament at Suffern and the 30th annual Edgemont tournament have each been moved from Saturday to Sunday. Wrestling should begin around the same time it was originally scheduled for, but I do know that Suffern coach Chris Matteotti told me that they will likely eliminate some of the wrestle back rounds in an attempt to start the finals around 2 p.m. (certainly a relief for Giants fans). That’s where I plan on being. (NOTE: I covered the Croton Duals last season, so I figured I’d change things up this year for the sake of fairness. The field at the Kohl is probably the strongest of any local tournament this weekend.)
As for the 35th annual Croton-Harmon Dual Meet tournament and the Conklin Memorial tournament at Nanuet, I still haven’t received definitive word on any postponements. I’ll post an update once I speak with the host coaches. If you have any information, please feel free to post it in the comments section.
UPDATE: The Conklin Memorial has also been moved to Sunday. I heard that the Croton Duals have also been moved back a day, but I haven’t been able to confirm it with their coach.
We only received one result on this very light Friday night, but I thought you all might be interested to see it:

Thursday’s results: Hen Hud’s Siegel ties school wins record • 01.19.12
Hen Hud senior Phil Siegel tied Sean Brophy’s school career wins record of 116 on Thursday in a 58-20 win over Lakeland. He’ll attempt to break the record at the Kohl Invitational at Suffern HS on Saturday.
There were quite a few notable matches that stood out to me, as well.
– In a slight upset, Clarkstown North’s Colby Kash defeated North Rockland’s Matt Caputo in a 132-pound bout by decision, 10-4. Caputo is expected to wrestle at 126 for sectionals.
– Yorktown’s Thomas Murray defeated Somers’ Nick Giancaspro in a 195-pound bout by decision, 4-3. Murray is expected to go 182 for sectionals.
– Somers’ Dom DeVita got bumped up from 220 to 285 to face Yorktown’s David Varain for the second time this season, and once again lost by a point.
– RC Ketcham’s Michael Morabito defeated Brewster’s Jimmy Duncan in their 132-pound bout by decision, 7-6. It was Morabito’s second win of the season over Duncan.
– In a D2 showdown, Ardsley’s Drew Longo defeated Dobbs Ferry’s Jimmy Kyreakedes in their 126-pound bout by decision, 7-6. Kyreakedes recently returned from injury. That’s a very interesting weight class.

Notebook: Favorites emerging; weekend tourneys • 01.19.12
In light of last weekend’s Eastern States Classic and the work that I’ve been doing to update my weight class rankings, this week’s notebook focused on the implications of certain wrestler’s performances at Eastern States on individual section title races. We have a pretty clear picture of who the favorites are in most weight classes, but there are still a few with some intrigue. I’ll let you know when the new rankings will be released—I’m just trying to make sure that I leave no stone unturned.
Also included in the notebook is information on all of this weekend’s local tournaments. Here is an extended version of the notebook that I wrote:
>>> If there is an environment that can duplicate the bright lights and pressure situations that a wrestler will encounter at the state tournament in Albany next month, it’s the Eastern States Classic in Loch Sheldrake.
The prestigious tournament was held at Sullivan Community College last weekend, providing many locals with an opportunity to compete on a big stage.
“When you’re in the finals, everyone is watching, and kids need to develop the savvy to deal with that,” New Rochelle coach Jim Guccione said. “Having been there come states, it’s going to add to your ability to perform.”
While no local wrestlers came away with individual titles, there were plenty who placed. With 20 teams from the Lower Hudson Valley present at the 10th annual Eastern States, those wrestlers who performed well went a long way to establishing the pecking order in each weight class for the sectional tournament.
“You can go through the weight classes, and you probably have a pretty good idea of the favorite in about 10 (out of 15),” Guccione said. “If you do well there, you should do really well in the section.”
Perhaps the wrestler who sent the clearest message to the rest of Section 1 was Guccione’s 99-pounder, Nick Barbaria.
Barbaria was seeded seventh in his weight class, but pulled off some upsets on his way to a second-place finish. Without question, he is the favorite to win a section title at 99 pounds.
“He’s minimized mistakes that he made last year, and he’s improved his mat awareness,” said Guccione of Barbaria, who placed third in the section at 96 pounds last season. “Certainly as of this moment, he’s the No. 1 kid in that weight class.”
The Realbuto brothers from Somers were two other local wrestlers who took second in their weight class at the Eastern States — Dylan at 113 pounds, and Brian at 152. Both won titles last season, and are clearly established as the favorites in their respective weight classes. For a four-time section champion like Brian, who hadn’t lost a match since 2010, the second-place finish could be both a humbling and motivating experience.
“I wouldn’t want to put a chip on Brian’s shoulder,” Somers coach William Von Tobel said. “He’s very focused, and I wouldn’t want to wrestle him after a loss.”
At 106 pounds, Brewster’s Mike Parise put a target on his back with a third-place finish, ahead of North Rockland’s Blaise Benderoth, who placed eighth. The same goes for Scarsdale’s Jacob Berkowitz (placed fourth at 182 pounds) and Mahopac’s Mike Spinelli (placed fifth at 195).
Fox Lane had three wrestlers who placed, and each seems to be locked in as the favorite to win his respective weight class — Sam Speno at 126 pounds, Danny Ventura at 132, and Matt Pasqualini at 160. But the section title picture in other weight classes isn’t quite as clear.
At 120 pounds, no locals from a group including New Rochelle’s A.J. Barbaria, Brewster’s Liam Erickson and North Rockland’s Jake DiMarsico made it past the second round, although Barbaria bowed out due to a groin strain.
Mahopac’s Jake Srednicki placed sixth at 138 pounds, but he lost earlier in the season to Fox Lane’s Tom Grippi (6-5), who did not place. North Rockland’s Mike Caputo had a strong showing with a fourth-place finish at 145 pounds, but he finished behind another Section 1 wrestler in John Jay-EF’s Dale White, who placed second.
New Rochelle’s Aaron Butler entered the season as the favorite at 170 pounds after winning a section title at 160 last year, but an ongoing right shoulder issue forced him to injury default in the second round. If the shoulder problem continues, that will open up the door for the likes of Brewster’s Harry Erickson and Yorktown’s Steven Sabella.
“We’re just going to go day by day,” Guccione said of Butler, who will wait until the end of the season for surgery. “If he’s feeling good, we’ll let him wrestle, and if not, we’ll pull him out. We’re doing work to try and strengthen it, but certain positions on the mat can cause the (shoulder) to pop out.”
The most telling matchup of local wrestlers at Eastern States came at 220 pounds. Somers’ Dom DeVita and New Rochelle’s Tyler Lilly have been considered the top two guys in their weight class all season, and DeVita established himself as the favorite with a 4-3 triple overtime win.
“Dom has the ability to win pretty much every match that he’s in with his style of wrestling,” Von Tobel said of DeVita, who placed third. “I know that was a big match for him confidence-wise, having a chance to wrestle (Lilly) already and get a feel for him.”

Wednesday’s results: Stanek picks up win No. 100 • 01.19.12
Sorry for the delay on these results. We had some sort of nearly 24 hour blog outage on all of our LoHud blogs, but the issue has now been resolved.
There were only two results that we received from Wednesday, but one was especially significant. Congrats to Hackley coach Fran Stanek on earning his 100th career coaching win!

Mahopac-Yorktown reaction with videos • 01.18.12
Mahopac’s 48-34 win over Yorktown on Tuesday served as yet another reminder of the positive direction that the program is moving under new coach Dennis DiSanto. The win marked the Indians’ 12th in a row, and came against an opponent who I thought matched up very evenly with them. It’s difficult to find any glaring weaknesses in either lineup, and each has a few guys with section title aspirations. The difference for Mahopac was its ability to come up big in swing matches, and both coaches seemed to have the same matches circled in their books.
“We knew it was going to come down to 152, 160, 113 and 120,” Yorktown coach John Tornambe said. “And we only got one of four.”
With the dual meet beginning at 152 pounds, we started off with back-to-back critical matches. Both resulted in wins for the Indians, and both came in comeback fashion.
Joe Castellitto (pictured to the right) was down 3-0 to Chris Pyle at 152 entering the final period, but he rallied at the end with an escape followed by a takedown in the final seconds to force OT. From there, he finished off the win with a takedown in the first OT.
At 160, Aaron Gallagher picked up six huge points with a third period pin against Harry Mandel. He was trailing 6-5 at the time of the pin.
Those wins were especially important because Yorktown had Steven Sabella (170) and Thomas Murray (182) coming up next, so the ‘Huskers had some points coming their way. Both guys notched pins, but because of its two wins to begin the match, Mahopac was only trailing 12-9 after two of Yorktown’s best wrestlers had taken the mat.
The most impressive wrestler of the day might have been Mahopac’s Mike Spinelli (pictured above), who looks like the best bet from either team to win a section title this season. At 195 pounds, Spinelli pinned Mike Karl in 35 seconds. After placing fifth at Eastern States, it would be difficult not to label Spinelli as the favorite in his weight class.
The two teams exchanged forfeits at 220 and 285, which was followed by three straight wins for the Indians. Mike DiNardo (106) and Paul Caruso (113) each picked up pins, while Joe Frezza (99) came up with a technical fall. DiSanto specifically pointed out Frezza, who has come out of nowhere recently. For the first month or so of the season, Mahopac was giving up a forfeit at 99 pounds. But the freshman has solidified that spot and really earned DiSanto’s trust.
Jordan Oliviera got the ‘Huskers back in the winning column with a pin at 120, which was followed by one of the matches that I came in anticipating. Yorktown’s Jimmy Kaishian has been wrestling at 120, but was bumped up to 126 to take on Mike Camastro. Camastro weathered an aggressive attack from Kaishian to begin the match, which resulted in a scoreless first period. From there, Camastro began to pick his shots, and the result was an impressive 9-0 major decision. Kaishian came into the match with only three losses, but Camastro proved that he is a contender within the section.
The other match I had my eye on was at 145, where Yorktown’s Joe Mastro was taking on Mahopac’s Max Bachmier. Bachmier came on strong at sectionals last season with a fourth place finish at 130, so this was a good test for Mastro. He passed with flying colors, taking and landing shots at will in a 16-6 major decision. He’s in a tough weight class with the likes of John Jay-EF’s Dale White and North Rockland’s Mike Caputo, but Mastro is definitely in the section title conversation.
Here are some videos that I took at Yorktown HS:
- Sabella pinned Mahopac’s Tim Bunyea at 170 pounds.
- Camastro majored Kaishian at 126 pounds.
- Mastro majored Bachmier at 145 pounds.
The only dual meet scheduled for Wednesday is Eastchester at Irvington at 4:30 p.m.
