Greetings everyone! I hope you’re all having a fun and relaxing holiday season!
I’ve been going through the schedule for the rest of the week, and it’s extremely light. In terms of dual meets, there is barely anything this week. There are no tournaments going on this weekend due to New Years, and there’s only one local tourney this week. That would be the annual Michael O’Connell tournament at Pearl River, which begins at 10 a.m. on Wednesday. The finals are scheduled for approximately 6 p.m.
I spoke with Pearl River coach Grier Yorks tonight, and got the full list of teams which will make up the 14-team field: Pearl River, Pleasantville, East Ramapo, Tappan Zee, Clarkstown North, Nyack, North Rockland B, Westlake, Hen Hud, Irvington, Lakeland/Panas, Ellenville (Section 9), Washingtonville (Sec. 9) and Tuxedo (Sec. 9).
I’m on vacation for the rest of the week, but I’ve arranged for Yorks to get in touch with one of my colleagues so that we can get the results in the paper. Once I get my hands on them, I’ll post them up on the blog. If any of you happen to stop by Pearl River to check out the action, leave your thoughts/observations in the comments section.
Happy New Year everyone!

Um Mid-Hudson tournament at Arlington Tuesday/Wednesday? Somers tournament on Thursday? Additionally Pearl River is having a Jv tournament, as well as Clarkstown South who is hosting theirs on Thursday.
dont cover too many JV tournaments, Arlington is out of the coverage area ( he said local tournaments)
are we sure about Somers that would be the one he missed if anything
Today’s 4th Annual Brewster JV Tournament
Mahopac-Carmel-Yorktown-Clarktown North-Highland-Stepinac-Woodlands-Somers-& host Brewster
Round Robin with over 500 bouts wrestled
Fox Lane heads down to LI for a competetive tournament.
All results for midhudsons can be found at sectionixwrestling.com. even though it was a section 1 tournament, kinda sad.
Hey Vince, what about The Mid-Hudson Tourney?
Used to be one of the most important in NYS!!!!!!
Vince in on Vacation. All the coaches could email in the information and I am sure Lohud would be more than happy to print them. Once again got to the nwca database and half the coaches have not entered much.
Someone needs to hold the coaches feet to the fire. They can’t print what they don’t know.
Mid-Huson is not what it once was.
Somers definitely was a newsworthy day. ask anyone who was there. and no coverage? would be nice to hear someone get a report on the status of all three injured boys. please keep all three in your prayers.
Somers results are on the section 1 blog, only 3 local teams, only somers had kids place, Byram Hills and Put Valley combined for maybe 5 semi-finalists,no finalist. Awards went to out of area kids. I’m not so sure any of that is all that newsworthy to the point that a guy should cover it while he is on vacation. Also I gotta good feeling the Somers coach probably didnt contact Vince seeing as even up to a few weeks ago he hadn’t entered a thing into the database. (gonna check again)yup nothing
do hope the boys are ok that were injured, was it anything serious ? just banged up ?
Mid hudsons is not what it once was, but it still might be the 2nd/3rd best idividual regular season tournament held in section 1. Shorline is easily the best, but i think mid hudsons is still better than the super 16 and beacon, kohl you could argue is better but majority of teams in that tournament arent sec 1 teams. Looking at the brackets most of the semis had 2-4 ranked kids in each weight class.
Blogatron: My point of newsworthy was what happened to make news, not what one would anticipate happening in advance. If this is a blog, then fine, maybe its not the responsibility of one single writer. If this represents LOHUD, then Lohud should treat it like any other news item that happens without notice – then react accordingly.
The fact that there were three separate injuries and all three were removed in ambulances is not only rare, but people in the community care and would like to know how the kids are.
I believe ssues of safety, response time, etc. are valid concerns and topics in this sport and deserve mention.
Fox Lane struggled at the Massapequa tournament. All of Fox Lanes top guys suffered loses besides Speno.
Fox Lane placed 3rd at the Holiday Tournament in Massapequa on Dec 29 … 2 points behind Massapequa (2nd). Connetquot placed 1st. Other schools in the tournament were Happaugue (4th), Monroe Woodbury (5th), Long Beach (6th), Syosset (7th), Warwick (8th), Division (9th), Bethpage (10th), and Manhasset (11th).
Fox Lane had one champion: Sam Speno (126), three 2nd place finishers: Tommy Grippi (138), Matt Pasqualini (160), Danny Clune (220), and three 3rd place finishers: Brandon Fay (99), Giancarlo Morreale (145), Andriy Lypchuk (285).
Sam Speno had the most pins (3) in the least time (5:35).
Wow what a tournament!!! when the number 3 ranked team in the state finishes 8th in a tournament you know its pretty tough. I wouldnt say having a loss or not placing in tournament like that is struggling.
yeah but its not like the EMTs are going to call into the paper and tell them what happened, cant go on boces and see tournaments, can’t go on the Somers page in the database and see the tournament, its not listed because he hasnt entered anything. Cant call 50+ coaches every day and ask them what their doing thats not his job. Some think it should be, to hound after coaches for info and results. There was no coverage of Somers for multiple reasons. Only one writer does the wrestling blog, some of the blogs have multiple writes. You could try and contact someone at LoHud about what happened. they might want to put in a call to the AD see what happend maybe run a story.
3rd for Fox Lane, not 8th and competing against the top teams in the state, Con, Mass, Haup and LB have studs, Monroe went toe-to-toe with FL in a dual they have a few studs too (they are strong again)

120 & 132 so loaded McCabe finishing 3rd at 120, Mark West 2nd seems like he doesnt want to be the odd man out this year ? anyone from Fox Lane know what happened there? i saw West beat McCabe 3-2 and then lost the final by default, injured in the match ? injured vs. McCabe ?
blog, warwick finished 8th in the tourney, they are currently the number 3 ranked team in the state. Mark west passed out while corradino had a cradle locked in, refs didnt notice till he was out cold. he was losing 5-2 to coradinno at that point.
at 132 mauriello could be the wrestling story of the year, last year he almost died and this year he has a shot at a state title.
Yes, Mauriello from Hauppauge is one of the top ranked kids at 132, ranked even over Ventura, same with Schwartzapfel from the same school who is better than Grippi at 138. Pasqualini lost to a nationaly ranked wrestler from Long Beach who is one of the best wrestlers in NYS at 152.
Clune actually looked good against one of the better 220 guys in the state (Drew) while Lypchuk continues to surprise for the Foxes.
The Foxes need to learn from their loses, and gear up for Shoreline, where FL will be looking to it for the very first time. After that, it’s Eastern States where some of the guys can look for some redemption
It’s not the end of the world, htere are worse things in life than suffering a wrestling loss !
