I’m all set up matside as we countdown to the start of the long awaited Division 1 final four at North Rockland HS. I just received word that we’ll be starting at 126 pounds in the semifinals. Two early matches I’ll have my eye on are New Rochelle’s AJ Barbaria vs. Brewster’s Tommy Gonska at 126, and Fox Lane’s Danny Ventura vs. North Rockland’s Matt Caputo at 132. I’m going to try and get video of a few key matches.
I’ll update results here as often as I can, but I’ll also be moving around quite a bit. Check me out on Twitter @vzmercogliano for more up-to-the-minute happenings.

Ventura going up?
Yes. Foxes moved Speno down to face Caputo, but NR responded by moving Caputo down to 126. Good move by NR.

Really….with Brewster winning the whole thing, those are the two pictures that you put in the paper…...shame on you
without having the paper wondering who the two pics are, if its Speno and Ventura can’t really blame them
can’t please everyone
There is an album on the blog and the majority of it is Speno and Ventura (state finalists, makes sense) but there are some of Grippi and none of Parise and only one of NoRock/NewRock so i can see someone being in a tiff but shaming the paper i dont know
Big Congratulations to Brewster!!! Keep it going boys.
Very great wrestling by all teams. Fox lane has the elite wrestlers to win states. However, Brewster has great depth throughout and can possibility be the section champs if they stay healthy.
Not trying to “please everyone”, but printing both pix of losing brewster boys in the finals really doesn’t make sense.
they tell the photographers who to photograph thats why most of the pics were Speno and Ventura. the pictures don’t match the story because Speno and Ventura are bigger stories than Brewster beating Fox Lane (a better tournament team) in a dual meet
congrats to the coaches for entering their matches after huge dual meets last night, good work guys. Why can’t some coaches go on after a single dual, or even just catch up on a sunday lol
Congrats to Brewster. Looking forward, does anyone know if the Shen tournament they are going to is a dual tournament ? Shen was the overall State Dual Meet champions last year could be fun to see how we match up. I think Shen might have been team champs at states too without looking i know they were at the top going into the finals with fox lane
How do you know by the picture only who won or lost? Looks like 2 scrambles to me. It’s not like its pictures of them getting their hand raised.
Just looked at brewsters schedule for the rest of the year. They have 2 dual tournaments ravena and rck duals, I dunno who is there but they should probably win rck. The rest of the schedule looks like Somers, Arlington are only possible stumbling blocks. Shen tourney is Individual tournament. I think they win out. Qualify 14 for sectionals, with 4-7 placements. Parisi wins brewster finishes 5th at sectionals.
nice job bears! if lohud wasnt so favorable towards westchester teams , this would normally be a bigger story.
lol this isnt a story just a live feed from last night, im pretty sure the story is still to come
QWERTY123, I am sorry but there is no possibility that Brewster can be sectional champs. Look at Fox Lanes five guys. They can get it done themselves, and those five could potentially bring the state championship back home. This is coming from a John Jay fan.
hey j, if fox lane could get the section 1 championship with “the five guys ” then why didnt they beat brewster ? dont be a hater , give credit where credit is due.
When was the last time 5 guys from the same team won sections? Not questioning whether they will or not just curious ?
Thanks for stating the obvious J.
If you remember correctly 3 years ago when JJ won the section dual title. JJ had 10 good wrestlers, but FL had 4 ELITE wrestlers. Yes they sent about 8 guys to sectionals while JJ sent 14 i believe and FL still ended up winning. This year Brewster has a deep and well rounded line up. But come on lets be honest, how many Brewster guys are actually contending for a section title? one, perhaps two? How many FL wrestlers are contending for a section title? Sam Speno, Dan Ventura, Tom Grippi, Giancarlo Morrealle, and Matt Pasqualini. Five guys.
Oh and to add when was the last time 3 guys from the same team almost won the state? in 2011 by Fox Lane.
Fox
Relax, Fox Lane did not have 3 state champs and they did not win states. When was the last time we had a team with 4 kids going to states?
hahaha why didnt Fox Lane beat Brewster lol did someone really compare a dual meet result to a section championship ? seriously posting like you know what you’re talking about with absolutely no clue how scoring will work comes sectionals ? Fox Lane will have 5 finalists ( i feel safe saying that) and a few others place. They will win the section
whyshould he relax ? he said almost ? one guy won, two guys took 2nd the team finished 3rd? 2nd? i think 3rd… that sounds like almost to me. I don’t know what teams like Shen lost, Fox Lane lost their champ. But two finalist back, gotta think they can make a run. Although no one is looking past Ventura now
rocky point 2009 3 state champs volpe, dutton, coggins
duals are a different than tournaments, especially elite tournaments like sectionals/ states. duals are won by number of good kids on your team, tournaments are won by number of elite kids on your team. Thats the difference between fox lane and everyone else. question is who has chance to take 2nd at sectionals?? Brewster, Somers, New ro, north rockland, mahopac
Brewster wrestled great. Give them credit.
They matched up very well against FL.
To beat Brewster, FL needed just one win in the last 6 matches, but Brewster hung tough, winning 2 close decisions that they needed to win. I can’t honestly say that they are a better dual team than FL, though they were last wednesday when it counted.
North Rockland has a very good team as well. Good wrestlers thru out their lineup. I think they would match up very well with Brewster.

Grappling, I believe fox lane sent Grippi, Speno, Cook and Rodrigues a few years ago.
Brewster, do you know what LOHUD stands for? Obviously schools in the coverage area will get more press. As far as the photographer, he came to the finals, took pictures of the first 3 matches (Speno, Ventura and Grippi) and left. Maybe he should have stayed and taken more pictures. Maybe if they started at 285 or 99, all the photo’s would have been of all the fox lane kids that lost. Congrats to Brewster, solid team with few holes in their lineup
