The Rams are coming off of a top 10 finish in the section, but lost four section-placers. Having graduated so many key pieces, Clarkstown North will have to rely on its young talent to develop quickly this season.
Rams’ coach Tony Mellino sent me the following information:
How did your team do last year? Dual meet record: 11-7; qualified a school-record 10 wrestlers for sectionals; finished 9th and was a NYS Scholar-Athlete Team.
Who are your top returning wrestlers? Dean Guevarra (27-5, fifth in the section), Colby Kash (32-9), Justin Hong (21-4) and Ryan Becker (22-10).
Who are the top wrestlers you lost to graduation? Christian Bouquet (second at sectionals), Paul Fields (fifth at sectionals), Scott Murphy (fourth at sectionals), Dan Seligson (sixth at sectionals), and Charlie Regalbuto (section qualifier).
What is the biggest strength of your line-up? That is yet to be determined, but we have been working hard in the off-season and the kids look hungry.
What is your biggest concern entering the season? We graduated 3/4 of our starting line-up and will only have two seniors in the room this year. So with a young team, I need quite a number of rookies to step up.
Which team(s) is your biggest rival? Based on proximity, I guess it would be Clarkstown South to the kids, but I’ve never placed any more importance on that match than any others.
Will you host any tournaments this year? The 7th Annual Clarkstown North Tournament on December 17th featuring Albany (Section II), Danbury (CT), Newburgh Free Academy (Section IX), West Islip (Section XI) and Horace Mann (Private).
