Sorry for the lack of activity over the weekend, but I just got back from vacation well-rested and ready to get the 2011-12 season started. The final weight class certifications should be coming out tomorrow, so I’ll be finalizing my preseason weight class rankings once I get a chance to look those over. Look for those in the coming days. I’ll also post my team power rankings by the end of the weekend, which should leave us all set for the season. A few dual meets get underway this week, but there’s not much going on except for the Port Chester and Rye tournaments on Saturday. I’ll have more on those later in the week.
For now, we’ll get back to the team previews, and we’ve got a good one today. I said at the end of last season that I like Yorktown as a team that should take a step forward this year. With the majority of its top wrestlers returning, the ‘Huskers seem to have the look of a top 10 team. They sent a decent amount of wrestlers to sectionals last season who should improve on their finishes this time around.
John Tornambe, who is entering his fourth season as Yorktown’s head coach, sent me the following information:
How did your team do last season? Dual meet record: 18-6; we had eight kids qualify for sectionals.
Who are your top returning wrestlers? Jimmy Kaishian, Kyle Santucci, Alec Tapia, Jessie Jewell, Chris Pyle, Joe Mastro, Steven Sabella, Thomas Murray and David Varian.
Who are the top wrestlers that you lost to graduation? Steven Martimucci
What is the biggest strength of your lineup? Experience.
What is your biggest concern entering the season? Staying healthy.
Which team(s) is your biggest rival? Ossining.
Will you host any tournaments this season? The Chase Media Group Holiday Duals on December 16th and 17th featuring: Yorktown, Carmel, Somers, Sleepy Hollow, John Jay, Westlake, Ossining, Hen Hud, Croton-Harmon, Putnam Valley, Dobbs Ferry and Byram Hills.
Wednesday’s preview: Clarkstown North
