I know that I said I wouldn’t be posting this weekend, but I lied. I missed you all too much. I’m up in Glens Falls for some fall sports state championships, and had a few minutes of free time, which I’ve been using to work on my wrestling preview (which runs in Friday’s paper).
Part of my preview will feature the top 10 teams to watch and the top 10 wrestlers to watch. I’ve already made up lists for each, but there are a few tough calls (I could make a list of the top 100 wrestlers pretty easily, so cutting it down is a difficult task). That’s where you come in.
I figured to keep the conversation going over the weekend, I’d ask you all to give me your lists. For the teams to watch, I’m doing the top seven in Division 1 and the top three in Division 2 (that third D2 school could be about five different teams). For the wrestlers to watch, my list is pretty much dominated by light-to-middle weights. That’s where most of the more accomplished wrestlers in the section come from. In D1, there are no returning section champs above 171 pounds. But I’ll have a place to fit some heavyweights to watch elsewhere in my preview, so drop some of those names if you like, as well.
So, let’s see what you guys think. I know we’ve got some opinionated bloggers out there…

Jacob Burkowitz of Scarsdale is probably the best big man in Sec 1.

A wrestler who has been on varsity for Fox lane for 4 seasons already, should make some noise this year. A section title is very much possible for Tommy Grippi who is entering his junior season, finalist last year losing to Realbuto.

Seperate your choices to D1 and D2… 10 for each ….add your foxlane choice into the mix. The talk is several schools seem to be counting on dark horses this year. Could be alot of talk about the unheard of boys making some noise this year! Any thoughts?

1 Brian Realbuto 4,1,3,1 State 2011 Junior National champion

I intentionally left a large gap after Brian because, there is one between him and everyone else. I took the latest state place finish and weighed that heaviest. I also took into account D2 not being as deep. I put berkowitz in because this is mainly middle to light weights and wanted some big guy in there and think he is the best of them.
If I left any state placers out please let me know.

What would make you put Delacruz above them?
longo and kyrekedes don’t have wins vs D1 competition to put them over him, and Im thinking after beating Duckham 3 times last year and not getting to states himself that he will be on a different level this year
D2
Duckham will be a story told for a long time, but, they both DNP at eastern states. Delacruz is an amazing athlete and seemed to have Jimmy Duchams number. He got pinned by a D2 kid at ES and also lost to Dylan Realbuto who was wrestling a weight beneath him.
Also think Calvano is a great wrestler but has won very few matches up in Albany.
My point is, it doesn’t matter what happens during the season. Kyle Dake loosing a few along the way, it matters what happens when you step on the mat when it counts most, at the end of the season.
People keep on track….give your lists… stop combinding D1 & D2 this year they are seperate..
“I figured to keep the conversation going over the weekend, I?d ask you all to give me your lists. Keep on track
He is combining D1 and D2 for top 10 wrestlers. If you list the top 10 in D2 it gets pretty ugly quick.
Hey not supposed to get ugly, keep D1 and D2 seperate and bring the opinions on…this is without a doubt the BEST coverage section 1 has EVER had so keep the chatter going
Agreed, the best coverage ever.
The unfortunate thing is when you go top 10 at D2 it starts to get ugly down low. I am a huge fan of D2 but there is only one kid that you can include in the conversation. It sucks but its true. Please give me a reason why I am wrong because I would love to be.

I just noticed that on the Nwcaonline website Clune and Ettenger of Fox Lane are not listed on the FL roster, as well as Young Rodriques. Are they not wrestling this year ?
cya
Perhaps they failed dehydration test ? Maybe little rodrigues didn’t pass or couldn’t take selective classification test with broken hand
Vince,
When will you be putting out the story?
Great start to the season. BEST coverage yet.
Grappling,
My full preview comes out in Friday’s paper. I’m putting the finishing touches on it today. It will include two feature stories, the top 10 teams to watch, the top 10 wrestlers to watch and the three biggest questions leading into the season.
Thanks for all of the early support guys. Good job on the lists, too. Most of you are thinking along the same lines that I am…

Again no Occhipinti ? There are one time section champs on that last list, guys who have lost to him on the list, just saying should be fun if Occhipinti, Calvano, Longo, Kyrekedes are all at 126. After Trey that’s the next 4. No way 4 go to states from that class, I mean maybe its possible but I doubt anyone is counting on it. So of those 4 how’s it shake out?
Occhipinti – strongest
Kyrekedes – toughest
Longo – slickiest
Calvano – out for revenge
Longo has the recent wins, and a state final. Occhipinti could easily move up to 132. Calvano probably won’t see the others on the mat till the semis of sectionals, jimmy should run into the other two more than anyone
Should be fun
R2D2
That would make for a very interesting sectional tournament with everyone at that weight. I think Calvano said he was going 120. He is tough and much improved. Longo is also very good but looks big not sure he makes it down there. So you are left with Occhipinti and Kyrekedes which makes for a great final.
Have to wait until the certs come out.
Good luck to all
R2d2
Ur right that slipped my mind I would put him at 4 and move ever one down a spot
D2 only has like 13/14 schools, very few get 20+ kids (nanuet, edgemont, maybe put valley) so its tough comparing them with D1 but I think this could be another year where the d2 guys get a little more respect. Could be a lit of repeat champs and will def be some good wrestlers looking for wild cards to states
99- dillon could repeat, will he make rockland final though ? Benderoth and maldoon
106-wanna see who is hear, patenestro? Korek?
113- trey will be trying to get back to a state final
120- is Kyrekedes light enough? Is it just Calvano ? Guys like Frederick, Bruno, abramsky falling out of the final again?
126- occhipinti won it last year, will Longo be here? Is he even heavier? Was it a spurt or the gym? Will he be powerful or getting used to the weight, can dillon challenge these guys?
132-is Longo this high? Or is this a class for the taking ?
138- is this class open too ?
145- is Pastore here? Osleeb out of his way now
152- should start getting into the Solis / Porter looking for another championship
160- without a list I’m thinking Ohks from edgemont
171- is Mold still this light ?
182-if not he is here
195-
195 – briet – should do good in rockland
220-open
285- see if successful football season has improved returning champ dinardo’s athletecism
D2 go stuff I think could take 138 heard he got big also some Westlake kid beat ohks twice at sectionals last year but Westlake does not wrestle in the offseson so who knows
heard dinardo is going 220
