Things seem to be coming together at the right time for the Panthers.
A convincing 57-27 win over Irvington on Tuesday serves as evidence that Edgemont belongs near the top of the list when discussing Division 2 contenders.
The Bulldogs were considered by many coaches as a team on the rise heading into this season, but the Panthers rattled off four wins in the first five matches of the day to build a comfortable lead. The lead held up, thanks in large part to a back and forth series of forfeits which prevented Irvington from gaining much ground.
Will Gray Beal began the day with a pin of Andrew Wassman 1:21 into the 125-pound bout, which was followed by Tommy Jachemczyk’s first varsity win. Jack McCormack at 140 and Mike Rothstein at 145 also notched pins for Edgemont, as they took a 21-6 lead heading into the 152-pound match.
Irvington’s Christian Malota nearly pinned Ross Kantor at the end of the first period, but Kantor put forth what appeared to be an extremely painful effort to keep both shoulders from touching the mat. He held off Malota for about 30 seconds until the horn finally sounded. This got the Edgemont crowd into, as both wrestlers exchanged points throughout the second period. At last, in what turned out to be the most exciting match of the day, Malota was able to get that elusive pin with 52 seconds remaining in the third.
In an odd turn of events after Irvington’s Nate Tamura’s pin in the 171-pound bout, the next five matches were all forfeits. Edgemont didn’t have a 189 or 285 pounder, while Irvington had no one at 215, 96 or 103. That ended any chance the Bulldogs may have had of pulling off a comeback.
Here’s some more notes:
- Trey Aslanian, Edgemont’s defending section champ at 96, is off to a great start in the 112 weight class. He is 25-0 up to this point, after he pinned Tyler Wexler with relative ease in 36 seconds. Along with 119-pounder Max Abramsky, who pinned Deanda Coleman in 28 seconds, the Panthers seem to have a couple of section title contenders. Said coach George DiChiara, “They’re more polish and more experienced, and they’re the ones who we really look for to set the tone. Unfortunately, we had to wait until the end, but they got the job done.”
- Irvington is dealing with some injuries, which explains all of the forfeits. According to coach Steve Aufiero, when healthy his team should have a full lineup from 103-285. Said Aufiero, “We didn’t match up well with them, so we bumped up a few of our light guys. I tried to play around with the lineup to try and see if we could pull off an upset. Hopefully, by mid January we should have a full lineup from 103 up.”
- Despite the loss, the Bulldogs most certainly appear to be a team on the rise. After having only 10 wrestlers on last year’s team, that total has doubled to 20 this season. Aufiero seems to have his team heading in the right direction, with strong performances from Malota at 152, Brett Pastore at 135 and Nate Tamura at 171. Said Malota, “We’re getting better in each match that we wrestle. We have a lot of young kids who are starting to come up big. By sectional time, I think we’re going to be a force. It’s going to be much better than the past couple of years.”
- The Panthers also have a team that should be making more and more noise in the coming seasons. Amazingly, Edgemont has a grand total of zero seniors on the team. They only have three juniors, so the team is made up almost exclusively of underclassmen. Said DiChiara, “I’m extremely proud of the ninth graders and tenth graders. It was the best overall performance we’ve had from top to bottom.”
My full story will appear in tomorrow’s paper.
We have some more results from Tuesday for you, with a couple of noteworthy meets. After coming within three points of knocking off Mahopac in their first meeting, Brewster fell short again the second time around. Also, Nanuet picked up a huge win over Division 1 power Suffern. The fact that the Golden Knights are knocking off top 10 D1 schools is a scary thought.

nanuet beats suffern but according to the poll they should finish 3rd in the section behind croton and edgemont. way to be honest with yourself guys.
The golden knights do look awesome. So who is number two in your mind oldskool
in duals? who ever wrestles best on that given day. Edgemont, pleasantville, westlake, pawling, croton. throw the names in a hat pick 1 and your probably as smart as the next guy.
surprised to see Croton even on the list….
lots of talk of other programs, Croton had even less wrestlers than Irvington last year, still has less this year and has a improved from 1 win last year to 11 so far this year. They return 4 section place finishers, all 9 wrestlers from last year have returned this year and in an open D2 have good chances to place at their weight classes.
however Nanuet is one of the top teams in the ENTIRE section despite size (top 10, not saying they are better than Fox Lane / Mahopac) blog must not be popular in Rockland
Very impressive Nanuet team beating Suffern and only falling to North Rockland and Clarkstown North because of FF’s. Nanuet will be a force with a full healthy club. Congrats to Coach Serra
For the NR vs Yonkers meet -Taylor Villa of NR @ 215 is Tyler Lilly….Please proof read before you post
serious question… does any d2 team have a kid at all 15 weights?
Pville has a wrestler at every weight they are very young this year to
