Before I get into tonight’s results, I wanted to give a preview for each of tomorrow’s Section 1 Dual Meet Championship Final Four matchups.
I’ll be in attendance at New Rochelle High School when the semifinals begin at 4:45 p.m. The finals will take place immediately following.
Mahopac v. Fox Lane
On paper, it appears as though each team has clear areas of strength in their respective lineups. Fox Lane holds the distinct advantage from 96-152 pounds. The Foxes swept Brewster in the quarterfinals in those weight classes, except for one loss at 112 to junior star Mike Parise. Steve Pagliuca has been Mahopac’s top guy other than heavyweight Andy Scopino, but Fox Lane’s Steven Rodrigues should offset his presence at 140. That’s definitely a match to watch.
Other Fox Lane names to watch who have gotten off to hot starts are Ben Ettlinger at 96, Sam Speno at 119, Danny Ventura at 125, Peter Grippi at 130 and Tom Grippi at 135. Those wrestlers should ensure that the Foxes have an overall points lead as we start getting to the big boys.
Where the Indians have an advantage will be in the higher weight classes, with Tom Viento at 160, Mike Spinelli at 215 and Scopino at 285. They should do some damage late in the meet, but they’re going to have to pull off some upsets earlier in the day if they want to overtake the Foxes. These are two of the hottest teams in the section right now, who will likely be seeing each other again down the line, but at this point I’d give the slight edge to Fox Lane.
New Rochelle v. Suffern
The match to watch in this one is going to be at 130, where New Ro’s Hunter Jones will take on Suffern’s Nick Oliveto. It could be a huge momentum boost for the Mounties if Oliveto pulls off the upset, because the Huguenots appear to have the deeper team overall. Take down one of their top dogs, and Suffern can send a big message.
The Mounties edged out Clarkstown North by one point to reach the Final 4, but New Ro should be their toughest competition yet this season. Along with Jones, Aron Butler at 160, Jonathan Stokes at 189 and Malcolm Allen at 285 all have the ability to finish. The Huguenots should have an advantage in the heavier weight classes.
Suffern’s Asher Kramer at 119 was Jared’s top wrestler to watch in Rockland entering the season, and along with Alex Oliveto at 103 should be able to get the Mounties some wins earlier in the meet. But as the matches wear on, I think New Ro will continue to pull away. They’re my pick to go to the finals.
Overall, I like Fox Lane to win the whole thing, and the potential match that I would be most excited to see would be a heavyweight showdown between Scopino and Allen in the finals. That would be nearly 600 pounds of brute force colliding. The first and second place finishers in last year’s section tournament are the two favorites once again this season.
I encourage everyone who can to come down county to the NRHS gym to stop by and check out what should be a thrilling afternoon of wrestling.

dont worry they will dodge each other and you wont get your big matchup, shredniki vs tommy grippi isnt that bad nor is atrip vs barbaria if everyone bumps away from the big time matchup
There will be no moving away from anyone in the Fox Lane-Mahopac Match.
ok so we get shredniki vs p. grippi, and s.rod vs pagliuca. ill believe it when it happens
I think fox lane PAC is the best match of the day I wish it was the finals. Those young bucks up in Ytown look good they will be a top team in a year or two!
Oliveto owns Hunter Jones, beat him 3 x’s in the past.
booch, where are you coaching and where did you last coach?
Booch is our coach at westlake and he use to coach at Yorktown. Our to teams work out a lot together and compete at some of the same tournaments. So I’m a fan of both team
Oldskool that was a good guss
=) im not the only one who thought that lol
No posts from the match? If this were a football game there would be a 100 updates from the writer at the big game, this is the biggest day of dual meet wrestling and no updates
Just guessing but oldskool ur post sound a lot like an old bloger s1/wss aka coach danhome
na im not him, actually last year me and him had some nice heated arguments. i actually miss him now that you brought it up. s1wss get back on the forum buddy!
Some times its a pain in the ass to read what blog owners wrote but this site is really user genial ! .
