Before we get to all of today’s results (highlighted by the Section One Dual Meet Championships), here is the our first edition of the wrestling Power Rankings. Since we’ve yet to see any of these teams first-hand, these rankings are based largely on the opinions we’ve gathered from coaches and wrestling enthusiasts. Thanks to Jared for his contributions on the teams from across the river…
Division 1 –
- Fox Lane: While John Jay are the defending section champs, the Foxes are the heavy favorite to take back the crown this season. From Steven Rodrigues to Sam Speno to Danny Ventura, Fox Lane is stacked with high-caliber wrestlers. An 8-0 start is a nice way to begin the season.
- John Jay: Despite a close loss to Brewster in today’s second round of the Dual Meet Championships, we’re not going to throw the Indians under the bus quite yet. The champs deserve their respect with top contenders such as Lucas Myer and Mark Swertfager, but the question may become the depth behind them.
- Mahopac: The Indians are off to a hot start after a nice win over Sleepy Hollow and a convincing opening day of the Dual Meet tourney. At this point, you have to consider them to be right on the heels of the top 2.
- Brewster: Before today’s win over John Jay, we had the Bears at #6, but that’s the kind of victory that justifies a jump in the rankings. Brewster was mentioned to me by a number of coaches in the preseason as a squad that is on the rise, and I think we’re already seeing the evidence of that.
- New Rochelle: The Huguenots made it out of the first two rounds with relative ease today. They seem to be one of those teams that will never go away. You can always count on New Ro to be a contender, thanks in large part to coach Jim Guccione, who has been a mainstay.
- Somers: We all know about Brian Realbuto, but does coach Dennis DiSanto have the firepower to compete top-to-bottom? We think so, thanks to wrestlers such as Reno Devita, Dylan Realbuto (Brian’s little brother) and a solid core of juniors who continue to get better. They’ll certainly be tested in a league with the likes of John Jay and Mahopac.
- North Rockland: The Red Raiders finished fourth at sectionals last season ‹ tops among Division I Rockland schools ‹ and returns as likely the best squad in the county. Matt Caputo came in sixth at the state tournament at 96 pounds a year ago, and he should be a significant force throughout the year.
- Suffern: Most area coaches believe Asher Kramer is the best wrestler in Rockland County. He finished fourth in the state tournament as 103 pounds last season and bulked up to wrestle at 112 pounds this year. Nick Oliveto made states last year, and he returns alongside Kramer. Also, many coaches look at Justin Artrip as a wrestler poised for a strong year.
- Carmel: The Rams finished last season 12-4, but graduated quite a few key guys. They are apart of the one of the toughest leagues in the section, so we’ll know where they stand pretty quickly. Nicky Rosalino and Tommy Davidson are some names to watch.
- Yorktown: The ‘Huskers ran into a hot Brewster team today, but put together a solid victory over Pleasantville. They round out our top 10.
Other teams to watch: Sleepy Hollow, Tappan Zee, Scarsdale
Division 2 –
- Nanuet: Rockland County doesn’t have many Division II schools, but it really doesn’t matter. Nanuet looks like the best small school in the entire section, and plenty of area coaches agree. The Golden Knights finished second at sectionals last year. This could be the year they win it.
A big reason for that is Joe Cummings, who most coaches think is ready to establish himself as perhaps the premiere wrestler in Division II. - Westlake: An early season win over Edgemont propels the Wildcats up to #2. Division 2 figures to be pretty wide open, so who’s to say they can’t remain in the top 3? Dean Rogener is a name to watch.
- Edgemont: A lot of coaches seem to like Panthers as potential favorites this season, led by sophomore John Aslanian. Was the loss to Westlake a testament to the Wildcats, or cause for concern? I’d lean towards the latter.
- Irvington: Just as was the case with Brewster in Division 1, the Bulldogs were mentioned most often when discussing teams on the rise in D2. Coach Jim Matera has his team poised to make some noise.
- Pleasantville: The defending section champs deserve to be in the top 5, if not solely for the fact that they currently hold the title belt. The loss of seven sectional finalist will be tough to overcome, but Chris Madera, Andrew Serino and heavyweight Obum Anyichie all have potential.
JARED NOTE: Thanks to commenter oldskool for pointing out my error! Joe Cummings is one of the premiere wrestlers in Rockland County, but not at Nanuet and not in Division II. He, in fact, wrestles for Nyack.
Other teams to watch: Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry

ps joe cumming is from nyack and he is d1, also where would the teams outside the coverage area but still in sec 1 like arlington, jjef, beacon and rck fit into the rankings? and even pawling in d2? looks like arlington vs mahopac next week will tell alot, beacon and jjef beat ossining tonight but got killed by fox lane and looks like rck beat carmel tonight but got killed by mahopac.
JJCR is down somewhat this season after loosing a ton of studs while Somers has some studs, but not enough to hang with the tops dogs.
Fox Lane
Mahopac
Arlington ( lost 2 studs which hurts)
New Rochelle
Brewster
Suffern
Clarkstown North
Clarkstown South
JJCR
North Rockland
Top 6 at least. Hard to pick the bottom 5

Most area coaches who actually have been paying attention for the last 5 years unlike the reporter for this newspaper know Nick Oliveto is far superior to Asher Kramer, not even close.
Hey Dougie,
While you may think Oliveto may have more talent (which he may), as Bill Parcells always said, you are what you are. Right now Kramer has an all-state finish, likely another this year, while Oliveto has zero to date. Results are all that matter.
I like the d2 rankings but pawling should be up there and in d1 mahopac is top 3
why didnt oliveto wrestle yesterday
imo …oliveto hasnt trained all year like kramer, i think kramer will do better
Btw Jim Matera is not the coach at Irvington
you would like the D2 rankings
Pawling shouldnt be they are way down, losing to you guys doesnt make them good
Westlake has already lost to pleasantville this year at Portchester
Croton beat Pleasantville at same tournament
Edgemont beat Croton at Port Chester but lost to Westlake in section 1 duals
So Div2 is Nanuet and then a bunch of schools that just come down to how teams match-up, there are a few schools with returning section place finishers, 2nd place will come down to who has the best support crew, who gets unexpected guys to place
fox lane
mahopac
arlington
brewster
new ro
noth rockland
clarkstown north
john jay
suffern
like phil said take these teams throw them in a hat and that finishes out your rankings. Carmel, Clarkstown south, somers, yorktown, rck, Tapan zee, sleepy, scarsdale.
Dude! pawling is good and will place in the top 3 at sections. Btw westlake had 4 starters out @ the PC tournament
beating a decimated Pleasantville team earns you the 2 ranking ? they’ve lost quite a few times this year
Some of the name wrestlers have zero quality wins this year (not all, and i wont get specific not my MO)
How about more of a division II preview ? which schools have how many returning place finishers ?? Irvington has a few (Jimenez, little Degnan, the super) Westlake has a couple, Pleasantville has one i believe, Nanuet has a handful, Croton has a few
who is wrestling 189 for somers high school?
Anyone know the score of the TZ vs North Rockland match?
D2 rankings should be like this
1. Nanuet- Canapero, Rahmizadeh, Calvano should run away with the section title
2. Pville the reason they lost to croton was because they did not have their best wrestler Madera wrestling in that match. have a few good wrestlers anychie, madera, serino,
3. Westlake- have a few good wrestler roegner, ferranti,
4. Croton- Only wrestler they have is Ochipinti
5. Edgemont- Have Trey Aslanian and the younger mccormack should be at the top next year with pville again.
The Degnan this year is not a good wrestler has no technique at all
I still think pawling should be in top five over croton and edgemont ther 145,152,171,189,215 all placse top 3 if not all finalist don’t sleep on these guys.
pawlings never going to be good to be honest with you
here’s the real question to ask. Other than nanuet, whould any of the d2 schools beat fox lane, arlington’s, north rocklands or mahopacs jv teams? serious question
Oldskool ur a jerk! Last year there were plenty of D2 schools beating D1 schools in duels and in tournaments D2 schools like pleasantville, edgemont, westlake, and Nanuet placed in the top half consitanly. What school did you wrestle for can they beat those teams jv or are you a fan of one of those D1 that sucks. So you need to talk trash about D2 because your team gets beat on up in D1.
I know LAST YEAR they were and i know the 152lb d2 sec champ beat both d1 finalists, and i know osleeb, longo, roegener, alasian and a bunch others are really talented. but, I am asking about THIS YEAR with all the teams down and losing so many sr’s from last yr. Its a serious question.
ps why am I a jerk, am i bad mouthing d2 programs? or are you bad mouthing the elite teams backups who would probably starting at half the schools in sec 1?
We will get a chance to see because jjcr is sending there Bteam to the NCN Duels and there is a lot of D2 teams there.
ok if only jjcr was elite this year they didnt even make the final 8 in the duals. d2 teams will beat them at the ncn duals.
Jjcr not elite sure ok they lost a close match to a team they beat four days earlier. Let’s see if there not elite when they have section champs come feb.
your an idiot
on monday look at jjcr scores from this weekend, you will see they arent elite. they are very good but not elite. i think they finish high in tournaments and at sections with 3 studs swertsfeger, smith, and myer. but in duals they just lost too much at one time, 4 all state kids is alot to lose. they are ranked high because of the respect for coach bill and the program, but right now they are probably 7th-9th best team in section. there are alot of teams that wish they would be that high in good years, which goes to show you how far that program has come this past decade.
A. I ment to say 3 champs.
B. Any team in the top ten of D1 is elite in my book
C. Mairo that was a well thought out statement I bet it took you a long time to think of it but it’s not it’s not a complete sentence dummy
your just a clown wildcat you make no sense and your points are not valid at all
I think you guys attacking wildcat are doing so because you know who he is, and knowing that why wouldn’t you. Just give him a hard time face to face, everyoe else does. Let’s keep it civil on the blog. Jjcr will be much improved by seasons end though, I agree. Fox lane is the not as far ahead as nanuet in d1 but that should expected considering it’s D1. Both teams are untouchable. Better poll question who finishes second mahopac, nrock, brewster, Arlington, jjcr
an Elite team is Fox Lane/Arlington/Mahopac this year.
Who am I, no body gives me a hard time in person.
You guys need to start looking out for Yorktown, I saw one of their practices, and they went harder than any team I’ve seen this season.
