Section 1 finishes fifth in DI and sixth in DII. Not as good as last year for DI but not bad. The Section had one more place finisher than last year.

jake the reporting was second to none great job
Jake
Thanks for making us at home feel like we we were sitting in that arena. You’re updates/coverage could not have been any better. A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Jake-
Your commitment to this sport from mid-year on was phenominal.
I hope all of those who had issues during the year would now speak up give crdit where credit is due. Jake, we all hope you are back next year, but sooner or later your writing skills, wit, and professionalism will take you to bigger and better things…(like your former colleague Kevin D)
Enjoy your next season.
I don’t want to start an uproar, but I want to give a true congratulations to Ryan Tompkins (4th) and Asher Kramer (4th). Out of the 15 guys from Section 1 who placed in the top 6 of States – these two were the only two to not train at Degl’s. Degl – please keep up the great work in making Section 1 better…we are all indebted to you.
Not Oblivious,
I want to congratulate Ryan Tompkins and Asher Kramer as well for an outstanding performance this weekend as well as the rest of the section1 team. Degl, coach or not is by far 1 of the most known people in the section to help kids who want to get better. He has some anger issues but so does every wrestler. He teaches everyone how to be tough and relentless at all costs which makes champions, whether he’s a hot head or not, he’s helped almost every wrestler in section 1, 1 way or another.
i dont think flamio, caputo, longo, kramer, tompkins, and srod currently train at isw. they may have gone there at some pt but they all go elsewhere now. i dont think kramer ever went there and im sure tompkins never did.
Flamio and Srod went there. not anymore and doesnt mean that Degl didn’t help them. He turned them into the men they are today
That’s a real stretch “check math.” Curious if you even passed math..but my math is checked – Flamio build his foundation there and had a falling out, Longo and SRod are there and SRod is there all of the time. Kramer and Tompkins – see above.
all i said is that they dont currently train there, thats it. i even stated that most went there at some pt. its scary sometimes. heres a real question for isw supporters, if lenzi and slane had wrestled at states who would you have been cheering for? is there more support for your club or the section? i am actually curious to see what people think and i dont think its a crazy question to ask
not oblivious
s rod still goes to isw but longo “no longer” there. he is traveling over the bridge now -that is a fact
So do guys like Penn gottfried and Lenzi still wrestle. Do the go to some national tournament.
Way to go Jake. The coverage was amazing. I don’t know how you did it but thank you for doing a great job this wrestling season. Good luck, you have a bright future ahead of yourself.
It’s really about support for wrestling at the highest levels. Then about support for those who live in the area and the section. That’s really what ISW supports. So Lenzi or Slane is less relevant. Lenzi happens to be ranked in the country at the moment, so it would be great to seem him compete at that level. If Slane were competitive at that level, he would have the full support of the Section, ISW, me and any fan of the support. I hope that clears it up.
Wrestling is hard, ISW gives people the tools to succeed and gives every athlete a chance to compete nationally. I am amazed by those in this section that can compete (at least at States) without it.
Lenzi has been invited to the Dapper Dan Classic an national “All-Star” event pitting a NY dual team against PA. His national ranking #9-USA Wrestling #10-Intermat should rise with his 2nd state title.
not oblivious, does that mean you were rooting for nick arauja and not flamio or srod because arujua is an elite nationally ranked wrestler and those 2 arent.
I haven’t seen anyone discuss the fact that kids who go to Degl’s train with their competition all year long. Why in the world would you send a kid to practice with the 3 or 4 other best kids in a weight class? Offseason, maybe. In-season? Absurd.
check math – no I hope SRod and Flamio will compete on the national levels…rankings are only a framework.
Sec1fan – I assume you’ve never wrestled. These guys are working out at their practices, training on their own AND going to Degl’s. If you have one move and one move only – you should probably train alone so no one sees your special move. If you know how to wrestle, you can compete with the same people all of the time and it makes you better. You can’t rely on the one (or 20) move(s) that worked against previous competitors.
Let’s poll the 13-15 (not sure if more) guys that went to Degl’s and placed in the top 6 in the state and ask them, “are you upset about training with your competition?” I bet I can tell you the response.
Then let’s poll the 40-45 who came close but didn’t quite make it.
make it to states I mean.
Those 40-45 will all be back…it’s not because Watterson saw their double-leg take down.
To be clear – those 40-45 guys will show they are believers in the system because they will return to ISW to make them better competitors. Their individual losses in sectionals, states, etc. is not because they were studied at Degl’s and mastered by another 17yr old.
Jake, As a first timer to The State Tournament, It was great to see so much talent on the mats. My son a wrestler and I enjoyed watching some of the names you only hear or read about in papers, to see them wrestle in this format. Also It was nice to see a large crowd of Section 1 supporters that made the trip to Albany. It was nice to see eveyone cheer on all the wrestlers from other schools that wrestled for Section 1 as a team.
Just wondering why Srod is considered degal’s kid and not coach Amuso’s. I think its disgusting that H.S coaches get no credit for what they do. Degal will never have a state champ because Degal does not have a team at states.
husker98,
agreed..and well put
Husker98 – Based on your limited view you are incorrect. Degl is a Fordham Prep Coach and has coached Lenzi at states..a 2x State Champ & 3x State Finalist. So he has coached a state champ and arguably the best wrestler in the area since Mazzurco.
i think that d2 had a very strong showing and the best in a while. i dont think that is being talked about enogh
Funny, I didn’t see John coaching Lenzi on the floor at Albany. John HAD a team years ago, he does not have a HS team now. This is just all semantics but husker is right on the money.
ISW fan what are you talking about? Was Degl in Lenzi’s corner for state finals?
no but i saw him demand lenzi take bottom when his dad and lenzi wanted neutral. I saw him scream bottom, lenzi hesitated looked right at Degl and then picked bottom like his coach told him to. rest is history. Degl also was in his corner two years ago for his 1st win and last year for his loss.
Degl was in his corner in 2008 & 2009. Was supposed to be in his corner in 2010 until 2 days before the tournament but a few folks from section 1 would not allow it due to the Slane incident.
anyone who wants to know what john degl is about should just ask Gottfried or Lenzi, both are going to Ivy League schools and both are his very well respected for their on and off mat accomplishments. Why listen or ask haters. Just go up to them and ask. You can ask anyone who has ever dealt with him on a real personal level and then make your opinion.
Great point – the “haters” are State losers and/or parents of losers that think they have a clue about wrestling.
I deal with John all of the time and he’s the single best coach I have ever met in my life and I’ve met 100s. Lenzi and Gottfried are two examples of his products. Mazzurco is another and he comes back to coach at ISW. Einfrank another – comes to coach. Lenzi and Penn and others will come back too. He knows the technique and the mentality better than almost any one. He’s plugged in with a lot of the premier college coaches as well. With the exception of a few college coaches, he’s the best.
Do the Section 1 coaches call Terry Brands or Dan Gable or Henry Cejudo or other Olympic medalists for guidance? Degl does.
So go meet John, sign your kids up and watch them develop…watch them turn in champions and men.
Degl is a fool, now that Realbuto has lost they may have to close the facility.
doug,
I think you’re wrong. Word on the street is now that Realbuto lost they are adding on to the facility to make it bigger and better. Just stop by and take a look, you’ll see for yourself.
Degl may make my son a better wrestler, but there are plenty of clubs that will do that. To make him a man, I know I will take him elsewhere.
OK, so Degl knows technical stuff about the sport, but as a parent is this the guy you want to be your sons role model? Fired at Hofstra, fired at Mahopac, fired at JJCR, arrested at Sectional practices in 03, kicked out of sectionals this year. I want my sons coach to be someone I can respect, who has integrity, is mature.
The fact that this guy has been fired so many times including being removed from numerous events is all you need to know. The facts speak for themselves.
Folks…stop lying Degl….was not fired from Hofstra nor JJCR. Unfortunately John has made mistakes but leadership has edges.
What about Paul Fields and Colby Kash? and guevara
