State tournament brackets are now up!
The brackets are in a new format that looks kind of complicated but isn’t too bad once you stare at it for a while.
The locals are seeded as follows:
Division I
96 – 2) Mike Parise; 3) Matt Caputo
103 – 2) Sam Speno; 6) Asher Kramer; 7) Jimmy Duckham
112 – 2) Brian Realbuto; 7) Nick Oliveto
119 – 5) Billy Watterson
125 – 2) Justis Flamio; 3) Steve Rodrigues
130 – 13) Henry Stauber*
135 – 1) Andrew Lenzi; 7) Joe Slane
140 – 16) Kevin Davidson*
145 – 5) Ryan Tompkins; 10) Dan Graff*
152 – 10) Marc Diaz*
160 – 15) Scott Genovesi*
171 – 8 ) Joe Cummings; 14) Nick Terp*
189 – 14) Ron Fermin*
215 – 14) Lucas Myers*
285 – 8 ) Andy Scopino; 13) Tim Gecaj*
Division II
96 – 5) Trey Aslanian; 8 ) Drew Longo
103 – 13) Jimmy Kyreakedes*
112 – 7) Anthony Calvano; 16) Mike Kar*
119 – 2) Penn Gottfried; 12) John Morato*
125 – 7) Ryan Osleeb
130 – 4) Greg Caneparo; 7) Mark McCormack; 15) Tory Ferranti*
135 – 11) Tim Boyle*
140 – 15) Andrew Mancusi*
145 – 10) Dan O’Gorman*
152 – 7) Chris Graybeal
160 – 2) Ray Wang; 8 ) Peter Talesnik
171 – 8 ) Jarron Saunders
189 – 12) Sean Degnan*
215 – 13) Kris Castro*
285 – 8 ) Amos Pierette*
*In most weight classes only the top eight kids are seeded. The rest are then placed based on a different formula but not given a numerical seed. However, the seed I listed next to their name is based their first-round opponent. If you face the No. 1 seed, you are ostensibly the No. 16. If you face the No. 2 you are ostensibly the No. 15, and so on.
The average seed of a local Division I wrestler is 8. The average seed of a local Division II wrestler is 9.

Not too bad. It’s unfortunate that Speno-Duckham and Realbuto-Oliveto will have to meet in the quarters. Also 145 is stacked, Ryan Tompkins returning 4th place finisher seeded 5th.
And WOW, Parise the 2 seed and Caputo the 3? That’s awesome we’ve got a great shot at a finalist there I don’t think anybody was expecting that.
it is really hard to believe that kevin davidson of all people is the lowest seed of any division 1 or 2 wrestler. I am not sure how strong 140 is across New York State but to see such a dominant wrestler be seeded last really says alot about the weight class. For some reason i when i download the brackets it comes up as a random bunch of numbers, letters and symbols. If anyone else can see them can you tell me if Davidson is wrestling Dutton his first match?
he is
Pretty good seeds
Boost my average
really seems like stauber, davidson, and genovici got fucked major. genovici is an explosive guy and if any he will be the one to upset the seeded wrestlers. so mark my words jake…genovici over 2 seed in prelims
really liking caputo and parise’s positions though.
parisi can thank caputo for the high seed. caputo beat 3 section champs at e.states so he was seeded over them then parisi got seeded over caputo. if caputo didnt get the last wildcard, parsi would be a 8 or higher. also the seeding is mostly based on beating kids who qualified for states. davidson is 40-0 but he hasnt beaten any state qualifiers this year, missing e.states killed him. i think genovesee skipped e.states 2 both seeded very low.
if seeds hold true, sec 1 will have, 0 state champs, 6 finalists 4d1, 2d2, 13 all state kids, 9d1, 4d2. if that is how we finish, is it a good/fair/poor showing? i think we end up with 1 less finalist but 4 more all state kids.
Remember, only the top 8 (plus ties) are seeded. Seeds 9-16 are drawn from a hat and adjusted to avoid 1st round match-ups from the same section. Old skool is correct about the impact of attending or not doing well at high stakes tourneys like Eastern States.
The brackets will have to change if the procedure is being applied. 125 D2 is a perfect example. Thompson(8th) beat Borst(4th). Osleeb Beat Thompson. Pretty sure the competition numbers do not hold either. The 6th seed is a 2x at large, who never placed and did not beat any one allstate/at large/of section champ. Could not have better numbers then Osleeb. Other brackets also have similar problems.
If true Osleeb should be 4th? Who knows, sometimes it pays to just wrestle. In particular for Osleeb who has the ability to beat all in at 125 D2 which is very deap. Not sure it matters where he goes except for the 3rd seed just got a easier quarter then the second seed who will likely meet Osleeb.
osleeb lost to sutton via choke out lol and i think both borst and thompson beat sutton. thats why hes where he is. plus who did osleeb beat this yr? and hes not a returning all state kid either so osleeb is probably seeded correctly
I believe you may be miss informed. To begin with the criteria does not consider common opponent. Olseeb beat Thompson (section 2 champ) and Fiscetta (catholic section champ). A loss to a common opponent matters not. Your “probably” wrong.
Actually there is a common opponent use. Borst beat sutton….however Hogan (3rd) lost to Fischetta the catholic section champ who Osleeb beat so why didnt that effect Hogan?....
At 171, who is Nick Terp?
it doesnt apply because hogan beat matt ross from rocky pt who osleeb lost to, so they cancel each other out. must have been a pain to seed this weight
section 1 sucks its a discrace, really i gotta admit it
i didnt write that last post. imitation is the sincere form of flattery
broooo….Nick Terp is the CHSAA champ from Salesian (in New Rochelle).
Davidson will still place, and every wrestler he faces after the first round will seem garbage after facing Dutton lol
davidson sucks my grandmothers better he wont place lol
Very true, after all the guy is nothing more than an undefeated returning Section Champ who pinned and teched his way through sectionals this year.
Jake, will you be at the states? and how often will you update us with results?
old coach…I will be at states. I can’t give you a time figure on how often I’ll update results, since I’ll also be running around the Times Union Center watching matches and doing interviews. But I’ll try to get updates in whenever I have a minute.
This is assuming that my internet cooperates of course, which wasn’t always the case last year. But my laptop has been less finicky lately so I’m optimistic.
old school – Your grandmother must be pretty damn good then…probably able to tech her way through sectionals too
your mother must be pretty darn good too
guys there is some one using my name and trying to start fights, so im not gonna be on anymore till he stops.
Jake- will you be running around the Times Union Center watching matches and doing interviews for D1 and D2? Or just D1 as seems to be your main concern?
I’ll be covering DI and DII.
Well let’s make sure they BOTH get the SAME coverage
Hope you do the same job for BOTH!
davidson wrestled in the section and didnt get any good competition unfortunately. Thats why his seed is so low. His coach wanted to look good with the record but…now hes doomed for states. davidson had fun with it too so it all works out i guess. if you want a state title u just hav to work for it u no? outwork everyone.
dude cover D1 fully, if you have time then maybe D2 but take care of the real wrestling first
Dude wasn’t talking to you, section one supposed to be all one team, would like to hear about all the wrestlers.
Agreed, but there’s no reason to accuse Jake of slighting the small school wrestlers. He has been unbiased all year and has given good coverage of both divisions.
You are incorrect D2 absolutly gets slighted..perfect example Feb 15, 2010 look back at the coverage..just want to hear about ALL section one as a team then there can be no debate.
Division 1 has more people that want to hear about it and a higher level of wrestling. It should, and does, get more coverage.
No one cares about small school wrestling! Large school has a higher level of wrestling and the kids involved at states DESERVE to be there and get more coverage. For example, Genta Muruyama and Joey Grippi both got 2nd in the state last year at 130lbs (Genta in small school and Grippi in large school). Yet when they faced each other earlier in the season, Grippi teched Genta. Genta’s feat of 2nd in the state is not nearly as great as Grippi’s and he does not deserve as much credit and coverage as Grippi. Also, the Journal News is in the business of making money. More people will buy their paper if they focus on the large school wrestlers because there are more large school schools and more people care about large school wrestling. That is a fact.
HowWeDeuce,
You sound so stupid when you open with a blanket ignorant statement like “No one cares about small school wrestling!” Last time I checked the #1 ranked division I NCAA wrestler was a small school nys wrester. How about paddock and ekstrom. And are you trying to say Genta should get less coverage of his great accomplishment then Grippi because of one head to head matchup in which he was majored not teched. Genta beat Digravio in Eastern states both are great wrestlers and both deserve coverage.
wraslinn,
You clearly don’t know what you’re talking about. Although I think HowWeDeuce was a little harsh, for the most part, there should be more coverage of large school, and I’m a small school wrestler. Let’s not even argue about Genta and Grippi because whether it was a major or a tech doesn’t matter. Grippi is the better wrestler. Yes, Kyle Dake is ranked #1 as a freshman and was a small school wrestler, but that doesn’t mean that small school deserves as much coverage as large school. That means Kyle Dake deserves more coverage. As a whole, large school wrestling should be covered more.
