Brewster cruised to a monstrous win at the Rye tournament, winning by 100+ points. Twelve different Bears made the finals and nine of them won. Bernardo Magalhaes, the 171 champ, was MOW.
Scarsdale was second and Mahopac, which was without Justis Flamio (he sat out so he could attend another tournament later) was third.
Matt Beckley at Rye had the finals results but no scores. Here’s what I got.
96 — Liam Erickson (Brewster) over Justin Jiminez (Irvington); 103 — Mike Parise (Brewster) over John Tambunting (Scarsdale); 112 — Jimmy Duncan (Brewster) over Gideon Werthmeier (Horace Mann); 119 — Justin Seim (Hackley) over David Occipinti (Croton); 125 — Stephen Pagliuca (Mahopac) over John Peragine (Brewster); 130 — Kyle McAlpin (Brewster) over Seth Marcus (Scarsdale); 135 — Danny Evangelakos (Horace Mann) over Jevon Gooden (Brewster); 140 — Ricardo Lopez (Brewster) over Alex Kay (Scarsdale); 145 — Harry Erickson (Brewster) over Pat Bruen (Mahopac); 152 — Graham Zahringer (Rye) over Alex Schwartz (Horace Mann); 160 — Nick Ghelarducci (Brewster) over Tom Viento (Mahopac); 171 — Bernardo Magalhaes (Brewster) over Oliver Mold (Pawling); 189 — Dan Santiago (Brewster) over Andrew Lefkowitz (Horace Greeley); 215 — Jim Magee (Pawling) over Chris PIckarts (Irvington); 285 — Andrew Scopino (Mahopac) over Mike Liston (Brewster).

Sal Imbimbo resigns as Mahopac Wrestling head coach and the Journal News doesn’t know why??? Maybe it has something to do with the DWI he was charged with in Cortlandt the other night that the Journal reported about the other day. I know you guys are short staffed but come on. And to mention this is not the first time this happened to poor Sal. He gave up the wrestling job at Ossining to become the interim athletic director and appointed himself varsity football coach. He had to resign that position the week before the first game for the same reason. Repeat offenders, maybe ADs should investigate before they go and hire a coach.
Explain to me how a DWI he received two days ago, which I was fully aware of, was a cause of his resignation two weeks ago. Unless Frank Miehle has a magic DeLorean we don’t know about.
HEY JAKE I HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING AND AS USUAL GREAT JOB. To fan, I don’t see the reason to blow up S.I. . He has made a serious mistake and is going to pay the price , No i do not know him . I see no reason to come on here and cause the guy more pain. I take Dwi very serious and never condone it . yet looks like he is paying the price. Maybe we can do with out the above post.
Good luck to all wrestlers this season.

Leave Jake alone hes just doing his job
I don’t get it, almost nothing in the today’s JN about the Rye tournament! At least in this blog we can see what school won (Brewster) and each individual weight class winner. It looks like the staff cuts are really taking a toll. Although it seems as though they had time and space for HS volleyball and HS hockey.
Hi Jake,
are you going to post anythig on the Carlucci Tournament friday and saturday?
to Putnam County – I agree I had to come to the blog to get the rye results – what about all the other place finishes. You can find anything you want about basketball though – some things never change.
Any Carlucci updates/scores. Did they even call it in??? Week #1 of season. Hopefully kinks will get worked out soon.
Carlucci action can be seen at http://www.sectiononewrestling.com Check the blog.
Meant check the forum.
Putnam countys comment is right. Last year when brewster came in 1st place, @ rye tourney not much was mentioned and again this yr. I wonder if scarsdale or rye won if things would be different. (Westchester schools). Putnam cty brewster don’t usually get much hype in journal. The little piece they wrote about it in todays paper was very lame….jake I’m glad u put something about it on your blog. Thanks
Yeah this is what I read also today…..wow what a story and I like how they mention 9 won and 3 more bears lost…..lol great details on placements and other schools for Sunday NEWS:
Brewster ran away with the Rye tournament by having nine wrestlers win championships. Bernardo Magalhaes (171) won Most Outstanding Wrestler.Three more Bears lost in the finals Scarsdale finished second and Mahopac third
Sorry about the lack of Carlucci results. I called Greg Domestico at PC but never heard back. I would have liked to have been there myself to get them but when your boss says be in the office, you be in the office. So calling is all I can do.
Jake-
just curious, what did your boss have you doing in the office on a saturday that was more important than you being at the tournament?
Helping to input all the games in every sport, editing material that was going into the paper, posting stories to the website, etc. Unfortunately, with the smaller staff, we have a lot of responsibilities beyond our beat.
Jake i do feel for ya …I spoke to one of your co-workers about work there and you guys sure earn your pay. Your doing a great job keep it going. Glad I’m not a journalist, at this time , guess you have to love it….
Just wondering there have been many matches going on and not much in the paper so who are the top teams so far? Also how is Mahopac doing with new coaches from looking at a box score I don’t realize many names were has Shrednicki & Flamio been? Looking forward to some big matched this coming week.
Rockfan1986, Top teams to me seem to be John Jay, Fox Lane, North Rockland, Brewster, and Arlington seems to be pretty good.
Jake,
Sorry we couldn’t connect on the results. I posted them as a reply on your Carlucci preview blog Saturday night around 9 o’clock. I should have e-mailed them to you also. It was a bad assumption on my part that you would dig through old blog posts for current results.

Jake,
An explanation on Sal may be this..when he was hired he wasnt background checked,an oversight by Mahopac administration and when he was this year and the background check results came back the season started already..the resignation I heard was coincidental to this DWI and related to them finally becoming aware of the first one..personally I dont think the first offense shouldve disqualified him as everyone makes mistakes and as long as nobody was hurt, however if the above scenario is true it raises the questions for all schools who are required to background any employee who has contact with students why it doesnt happen 100% of the time? Can you imagine an elementary school teacher hired whos a pedophile..I think what happens is when the employee isnt a teacher in the district the burden falls on the athletic director or principal to make sure when they start they go through the necessary steps..including volunteer coaches like parents who we see far too often these days..a classroom teacher has to fill out volumes of paperwork regarding health insurance, payroll, pension, etc..not the case with coaches who come and go these days routinely…now I cant swear to the above scenario..just telling you what I have heard..if not the timing doesnt make sense..mustve been something real bad and then he compounded by going out and getting arrested again..in any case he was a great coach and you hope he rebounds..Jake have you spoken to Mahopac administration..maybe pose the above scenario..likely they wont comment but in my mind if its the above scenario, frankly they own some it by hiring him in violation of their own policy in the first place. What stinks is in the same week news of Justis Flamio attending the Naval Academy, more people are talking about this fiasco in Mahopac..what a shame and congratulations to Justis..he and his brother were terrific wrestlers for the Pac!Really hard working, dedicated athletes and students!
PacAlum
Welcome to the wrestling blog and looking forward to our give and take now about wrestling and of course Mahopac.
We may never know why Sal was hired or fired.
Sal came to Mahopac after Mahopac won 3 straight Sec 1 Championships with 3 different coaches. After one down year, Mahopac with the talent they had, much of it with the help of Mahopac Businessman, alumni and past head coach John Degl reloaded and won 3 more section championships for a total of 6 in 7 years. No other Mahopac sport was ever as successful.
Over the years, much of the talent graduated and without a year round program, an almost non existant JV program, budget problems, 2 years without a youth program and yes a lack of support from Mahopac admin, the program was going downhill.
Mahopac combined record in sec 1 dual meet tournament is 1-2, no wins in crossover matches with Rockland County schools and last 2 years 4th and 8th place in sectionals. Last year Mahopac was no factor in the championship at all. The program or lack of program was going down the tube. Since Sal was head coach and the leader of the program or lack of program, he is responsible. This is not my opinion alone, with many friends in the section they want to know what happen to Mahopac.
Going forward, Mahopac hired Juan Torres as the new head coach of Mahopac. He is a very tenured coach in sec 1, long over due to be a head coach. He is a hard working past wrestler from Sleepy Hollow HS and will fit in well with the Mahopac athlete. Assistant Coaches Figueroa and Popper are responsible for conditioning and motivation of the team. The program is coming back and will at the end of the year be a serious contender for the section 1 championship.
PacAlum come to the HS Wed 430pm for the start of section 1 dual championships. They will face Westlake and a very strong Pleasantville Team or a always strong Ossinging team in the secong round.
PS Dont worry about Flamio, he announced Navy assurance on Nov 6th before season started and nobody is going to take anything away from Justis because of Mahopac coaching situation.
Rebel…That’s a very complete take. I like it.
Rebel..
Good to catchup again.Thrilling last week victory by the Pac on the gridiron versus perennial power Lincoln of Yonkers in the rain and about 40 degrees, needless to say I opted to stay by the warmth of the fireplace. Well enough of that, we have all offseason to ponder that mess. Cant make it Wednesday but hope to catch you sometime this year at a match. Tommy Viento is wrestling 160 and Mark Scolpino at Super Hvyweight. Both should be key members of the football team next season. You made an interesting point that many have raised in recent days. There have been rumblings, rightly or wrongly about the coach away from the gym since before he came to Mahopac. How the heck did he ever get hired in the first place, given the whispers that in retrospect appear to be well placed in terms of arrests, etc? What are your thoughts? I’m not familiar with Torres, but what are your thoughts on Degl back in the gym? I know his reputation as a great wrestling teacher are sometimes overshadowed by his demeanor/persona/antics and disdain for the current AD. I dont think it could ever happen. What do you think? Why not have a guy like Dom Oddo, a Navy grad and former All American wrestler who has been involved in the program with his son take the reigns? Is he even involved anymore? My sense from what Ive heard is no?Give me the low down. You are way ahead of the curve right now. Im trying to catch up quickly.
PacAlum
You now know why I call it the losers bowl. With Mahopac picking their last game and picking Lincoln so they can say they had a winning record by playing them and beating them, I would call it the super(losers)bowl. Donahoe was working on getting a 10th game against Saunders, FDR or Dover Plains LOL. Maybe Miele can make a similiar adjustment to the FB program that he did to the wrestling program.
Back to wrestling. Tommy Viento as you know is a strong kid and have a great shot at All Section this year. Andy Scopino is already all section and will contend for state tournament in Albany. He is a beast.
As far as the previous coach, I have said all I am going to say about him. What has been said about him is mostly true. As far as why he was hired, I have no facts but there was a Ossining-Mahopac connection that encouraged his hiring. I will not say who that was because I am only making am assumptiom the same as why he was fired. Their are many stories but only one truth and I dont know.
Miele will have to take negative credit for hiring Donahoe for FB and Imbimbo for wrestling, he did make a super choice with Juan Torres. All the people in section have told me that this appointment was long over due. He has taken over a very young Mahopac team and the wrestlers and the parents have embraced his nofavortism on who wrestles(all wrestle-off), no nonsense and hard work.
Degl has a wrestling business in Somers and feel he would not be back to Mahopac for a number of years.
Oddo retired from coaching after his son graduated from Mahopac High
Both Oddo & Degl are super coaches and can coach at the college level but they both have businesses and are happy doing that
Juan Torres is the new wrestling coach @ Mahopac now and into the future. Look for the program to fight for a section title every year.
Rebel..
See I am behind..I had Scolpinos first name wrong..the proble is Viento is in a real diificult area weight class wise traditionally..Degl won the state championship at 177 and played football over 200lbs..Im pretty certain you have those real touch 180lb type kids who get down in his neighborhood..He is very strong but he really is a 155-160lb kid..a big difference from what Ive seen on the mats in years past..you rarely see that except in hvy to super hvy weight classes, where kids wrestle true..I didnt realize Scolpino was that good..hes a real big kid..but for some reason it seemed his PT at the end of football season declined vs the beginning of the season..Sounds like Torres is a great find..whats sad is Brewster head coach Tom Looby is a former All section wrestler from Mahopac and his built a real nice program with a strong youth feeder program, 2 other Mahopac alums Mike Bellucci and Jack Duncan are the other coaches..and you have Will Carano and Joe Mahoney at Putnam Valley, all All Section or All County alum..Im sure Torres is and will be fantastic but how is it we cant keep some of our own?It would certainly help the kids understand the rich tradition in wrestling that goes back to at least the early 70’s with Coach Joe Bellucci Sr…while the familiar names everyone recalls are from 1990 on..there was some real amazing wrestling for at least 20 years before that I am familiar with..do they have any type of trophy showcase or wrestling type display at the school? Havent been there for a contest indoors in years?Whats the next must see match after this Wednesday?Any good weekend events, those are typically easier for me.Lets hope Torres has a long tenure, its tough to build continuity in any program when theres a coaching carousel. Good Luck!
From what I have heard Coach Torres has reached out to some former Mahopac Wrestlers and they have spoken to the team. He inherited a very young team but I hear the team and parents are buying into his ideas and is working with every level of the program. I think they will do fine and will be solid in the years to come, they have a coach that will do the extra work in the off season.
RockFan1986
Right on target.
PacAlum
Scopino was hurt the last 2 games but is doing well now. At Rye on Sat he had 2 quick pin for the title. Coach Donahoe missed a golden opportunity by not using him on the offensive line.
Please check, I know one of the Bellucci is AD at Pawling but not sure which one. His dad is retired and living in Pawling as well. Joe Bellucci is a teacher at Mahopac but not coaching. If I made a mistake with where each Bellucci is, please correct me, you know there are alot of them. Joe Bellucci Sr started Mahopac Youth Program before MSA and is still the only sport not associated with MSA. Now you know one reason why Mahopac wrestling program has been successful.
As far as why no Mahopac alumni is coaching Mahopac, you know who to ask. You might ask him about the FB team as well. Mahopac schedule for weekends are at tournaments on the road. There is another question to ask that person why does Mahopac not sponcer a wrestling tournament at Mahopac High. The funny thing is he did for the funny man wrestling(WWE), why not for our kids.
2 matches I recommend would be of course
Carmel Jan 13 430pm and Juan's HSSleepy Hollow Jan 28 night match at 600pm.Rebel,
Years ago(more than 20) Mahopac did host a wrestling tournament under Joe Bellucci Sr..it was in the old gymnasium or “big gym” as it was known back in the day..which wrestling never competed in, they wrestled in what is now the fitness facility..which had no seating and was dingy at best. Always well attended..christ the gymnastics team hosts a very popular invitational and the cheerleaders just hosted an invitational this last weekend. The AD at Pawling is John Bellucci who was a standout football, wrestler and baseball player..played at Lafayette on a football scholarship. Was a big kid and tough, played FB in football and was about 210-215 and wrestled like 187..was real good, Mike coaches and teaches at Brewster, there was another brother who was a fantastic wrestler, Pete who went on to Princeton for wrestling, Joe wrestled at Colgate..all 4 brothers were 3 sport athletes..pretty amazing when you never see that these days in the age of specialization..and all 4 brothers went to college for sports, 2 for football, 2 for wrestling!Impressive..Ive marked down the Carmel match..do they still hold the Super 16 there..Ive been a number of times but not in many, many years? And yes the FB team couldve used Scolpino on the line offensively..their left guard was about 5’3” 160 pounds..seriously, and the left tackle was not real tough and not nearly as strong as Scolpino,..we’ll see what next fall brings in that arena?
PacAlum
Super 16 this year will be at Yorkers. Not sure where because Yonkers has one team for all 5 HS(Saunders, Roosevelt, Gordon, Lincoln & Yonkers)on Jan 30
Dont miss Carmel & Sleepy Hollow matches. Both on the road with large intense crowds expected.
The Belucci family and people like that are the Mahopac you remember.
Because of snow, dual meet tournament pushed back one day, Thursday
430pm with 2 matches guaranteedMahopac HS.Let me ask you how does Mahopac match up vs Carmel & Sleepy Hollow? I also saw they are wrestling Beacon & Arlington so a tough schedule for a team with new coaches I guess they aren’t shying away from a challenge. What other tournaments are they in?
