In Division 2, only six of the 17 local wrestlers made it out of the first round. The lucky ones were Anthony Calvano of Nanuet, Ryan Osleeb of North Salem, Genta Murayama of Edgemont, Derrick Longo of Ardsley, Will Carter of Westlake and wild card Chris Orlando of Putnam Valley.
Will be back soon with Division 1 results.
UPDATE 3:16: Division 1 did twice as well as Division 2 in the first round. Twelve wrestlers have advanced. Those moving on to the quarterfinals are Fox Lane’s Sam Speno, Luke Speno, Joey Grippi and Steven Rodrigues, Somers’ Brian Realbuto, John Jay’s Henry Stauber, Mahopac’s Justis Flamio, Nyack’s Udit Thakur, Lakeland-Panas’ Joey Hauser, Clarkstown North’s Steven Ramos and Ossining’s James Brundage and Clay Neivert.
We’ll be back with quarterfinal results when they’re complete.
UPDATE 3:38: Hooray, internet is up. But for how long?
Forgot to mention that Lenzi also made it out of the first round.
As for quarterfinal results, Flamio, Rodrigues, Realbuto, and Sam Speno moved on in DI.
UPDATE 4:00: Genta Murayama and Udit Thakur won their quarterfinals. Thakur was down 5-4 at the buzzer but an unsportsmanlike conduct pushed it into OT, where he won 7-5. He also won his first round in OT.
UPDATE 5:10: Ramos, Brundage and Neivert will also be moving on to Day 2 after winning their quarterfinal matches.
All told, 11 local wrestlers are still in the running for state championships and will be back at it tomorrow.
UPDATE 6:17: Just to sum up, here are the area wrestlers in Division I who won their two matches today and go into tomorrow with a chance at a state title: Sam Speno (96), Brian Realbuto (103), Steve Rodrigues (112), Justis Flamio (119), Joey Grippi (130), Udit Thakur (135), Andrew Lenzi (135), Steve Ramos (152), James Brundage (160), Clay Neivert (171).
That’s 10 wrestlers out of 16 entrants, a very nice showing. It’s so good, in fact, that Section 1 is second in the team standings. And just a half point behind Section 11 for first. Can you believe that? Go Section I!
As far as Division II goes….well, the less said the better. Twelve DII locals entered, only one left. Edgemont’s Genta Murayama (130) is the sole survivor of Day 1. Section 1 is eighth in the DII points standings.
I’ll be back with consi results later.
UPDATE 7:47: The following wrestlers lost their first consolation match and are now out of the tournament: Asher Kramer, Kevin Davidson, Sal Marchese, Josue Cardenas, Cristian Garcia, Michael Kane, Peter Talesnick, Ray Wang, Jarron Saunders, Steve Ramundo, Kris Castro, Chris Galletta. All those not mentioned are still alive, either in the semifinals or the consolation bracket.
UPDATE 10:03: The following wrestlers lost in the regular bracket but won their consolation matches to advance to the consi semifinals. They still have a shot at 3rd place. Joey Hauser, Luke Speno, Penn Gottfried, Ryan Osleeb, Dan Manley, Derrick Longo, Chris Orlando, Will Carter.

For some reason, I can’t access the NYS site at work (something about high bandwidth). Could some kind soul place the updates on the blog. Much appreciated.
I don’t think the updates will be made as often as we would like on the NYS site.

lighthousewrestling.com live play by play jake poor job so far.
JAKE, HATE TO SAY IT AND I’VE TRIED TO REMAIN PATIENT BUT HORRIBLE JOB SO FAR. I FIND IT TERRIBLE HARD TO BELIEVE THAT YOY CANNOT GIVE US SOME BETTER/MORE FREQUENT UPDATES. YOU ARE GONE FOR HRS.
Tomkins (be) ramos (cn) get wins
Both boys from the O are in the semies
you guys do realize Jake is a reporter, not a play-by-play guy, or an analyst his job is to write up a story at the end of the day…..
be grateful for whatever you get… he is an out of area reporter trying to get stuff done up there, and i’m sure he is busy trying to interview wrestlers for his NEWSPAPER STORY (his main job, the blog is just a piece of it).
Jake didn’t even have to go to states, (he is up there no ?) he could have just had some coaches call in reports and statements from wrestlers or even talk to wrestlers over the phone (which has been done in the past, trust me)
I mean has civilization slide that far to have people think its acceptable to tell people they are doing a crap job i mean come on already … how old are we when we learn if you dont have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all… you know there is something to that … its called common decency, try to find some
oh and congrats to my O-town boys well on the way to what they are looking for
HAUSER LOST 2-1. S.SPENO, REALBUTO, S-ROD, JUSTIS,GRIPPI THAKUR, TOMPKINS NOT SPENO AT 145, RAMOS, BRUNDAGEB AND NEIVERT ALL IN THE SEMI’S. SECTION ONE IN A CLOSE SECOND PLACE RIGHT NOW. WAY TO KICK ASS BOYS!! IF WE CAN GET SOME TOUGH WRESTLEBACK PERFORMANCES AND JUST CONVERT ON SOME OF THESE SEMI’S IT COULD BE A GREAT YEAR FOR S-1 UP THERE!!
Outstanding, keep the momentum rolling. Special congrats to Udit Thakur and Steven Ramos, two Rockland County Champs.
Coach Rogers
Excellent job in the quarters but now the guys really need to step it up in the semis. If you dont win that first match tomorrow, wrestlebacks like in any tournement are crucial. This is usually where section 1 takes a beating.
-So far so good.
10 section one semi-finalists plus Lenzi makes 11 awesome….
96 section champ Kramer cant score on Max, Max forfeits to Mike who is hands down better, thats Sam Speno’s draw, fun…
103 Realbuto had the #1 seed (should have been him) lose already he faces the the 9?/8? now, i like his odds
don’t know anything about S-Rod’s kid except he is the 2 seed and a sectionXI kid which is a good start
Justice has a NFA kid ? have they wrestled this year ??
Grippi got to the semis and has his rematch against Ruggirello
Udit draws Lenzi so no matter what an area wrestler is in the finals, I dont know if these two have wrestled but i know Lenzi did better at Easterns doesnt matter though winner gets Dutton in the finals more than likely, if Davidon wins his wrestle back he is stuck with Ligouri in the next round
Tough lose for Hauser, good luck in the wrestlebacks
Speno tough draw, his Rocky Point kid beats Tompkins in finals, good luck in the wrestleback Speno
don’t know about Ramos’ kid, anyone ???
Brundage apparently on a mission pinning through so far, avenging loses, keep it going ManMan
so happy for Neivert, keep it up Clay
Heavyweights are struggling but im not surprised, we are a little outmatched here, this kid Austin Meys, wow, at his rate he will be in the finals with about 1 min of mat time combined, 25 and 20 second pins !! at states ! insane !!
12 ??? i thought there was 15 weight classes, i counted 17
lot of kids getting pinned, tough day,
in Div, 1 Garcia has drawn Laporta in wrestlebacks, i hope the kids only win at states isnt against a section 1 kid
how bout section 1 being in 2nd thats great improvement…..and we have 10 guys in the semis all in position to get to the finals GREAT JOB SECTION 1 we are making a name for ourselves!!!!!
well in position because semi-finals are the path to the finals, but we have some tough match-ups, but i like this group a lot of focused kids, maybe a couple weren’t totally focused a few weeks ago but they are now. I am so torn wether or not to drive up tomorrow, between suffering from myfundsarelow, and the big Div III lacrosse game that would be much cheaper i don’t know what to do with myself
tough day for Kramer, good motivation for next year though
what happened with Garcia ?? did he get hurt ?
love that section 1 is leading, although we dont have alot of guys in wrestlebacks to add points, but thats ok because the section Xi is in the same boat. Gonna start running into each other tomorrow, but i dont think its out of the question to have 5-6 finalists tomorrow, there are no locks at states but i like Realbuto, S-Rod, i like Grippi to beat Codey this time, Brundage and Clay to make the finals, don’t know enough to say i like Tompkins or Ramos’ chances but im certainly pulling for them
I just hope there is someone up there that can pull these section 1 boys together and have them realize just what is out there for them, I mean in first so far, so why is it out of the question ?? I think this states is as wide open as any i can remember, i dont think im alone there. But guys who fall in the semi’s because i mean its a tough deal for them to all make the finals, 10 finalists would prob be a record, but the kids who fall in the semi’s have to wrestle back tough for Section 1 to get top 3 nevermind stay on top
s1wss,
Flamio has beaten the NFA kid Laria countless times in the past and beat him this year at Eastern States.
Hauser wins 3-2, Rose done, Speno pinned his kid, Laporta done, Stauber done, Castor done, but he got a pin in there before it was over and we slid back a little 3.5 pts behind Section XI, Section II right on our heels, then VIII, then IX so its all Hudson Valley and Long Island wester and northern and central NY are falling behind.
Section XI has 13 semi-finalists, 2 heads up matches with us Speno & S.Rod, 2 of their semi-finalists are wrestling each other, they had 3 kids qualify at 96 and all 3 should place, 1 will win, don’t be surprised if they go 1,2,3
the 96 twins from section 11 go with the coin flip, what kind of bs is that hahahahaha. family comes first I feal for them having the cabibbo bro’s on my team, but it comes with the teritory of double entry. the kid who lost the
“coin flip” will prob take 3rd not losing a match on the mat at states. great job to all the kids today prob one of the best days in section 1 wrestling history, but dont be satisfied guys!
GUYS, IVE BEEN TELLING YOU, ALL WEEK INCLUDING TODAY, BANNER YEAR FOR SECTION ONE UP THERE.
Another pathetic post by a pathetic wrestling fan that doesn’t understand the concept of something being out of a person’s control. Get a life.
